How to handle Incoming (Receiving) Inspection as a PFMEA item?

Re: How to handle incoming inspection as a PFMEA item?

You are right, incoming inspection is not required to include in the FMEA, if you want to include the transportation and loading and unloading at receiving stage for transit damages as failure mode and to analyse the current process controls of transportation and loading and unloading is sufficient or not then only you need to add these processes, i.e, loading and unloading and transportation at receiving stage.
I think the incoming inspection shall be included in p-FMEA as per AIAG Blu Book guidelines and ISO TS requirements.
P-FMEA is not only referred to Manufacturing process but to the entire process flow that shall also include Incoming and Shipping as well.
Besided, you shall ensure that the control plan is stricly linked to p-FMEA. If not, this could be seen as a failure of QMS. :bigwave:

Re: How to handle incoming inspection as a PFMEA item?

Actually my intention was while receiving the meterials the incoming inspection will be current process control and you can include receipt of materials as a process and failure modes will be transit/ loading unloading damages. But the dimensional difference will not be considered as the potential cause of that will be supplier's error. FMEA manual clearly states that while preparing FMEA you should consider that the input materials are OK.

Ya I agree with you that we should consider the incoming of material / packing and shipping also. But my intention was we should not consider incoming inspection as seperate process. That can be considered as current process control for receipt of materials.

The FMEA manual advises that material coming into a process or operation should be considered conforming, so as to focus on the potential failure modes of only the operation under consideration. Inspection operations are different though, because by definition the state of the material is unknown. For that reason, potential failures of any inspection operation should include the risk of accepting nonconforming material or rejecting conforming material.

An automotive company I used to work for did not acknowledge incoming inspection on a PFMEA as it was not part of the manufacturing process. Our PFMEA's started with the time the raw material hit the floor. For all the times the customers reviewed FMEA's and the TS auditors, there was never any issues. We did have a statement in regards to incoming inspection however on the PFMEA referencing the procedures used. I might add however that we did go into great detail in the Control Plan as to what and how we handled incoming inspection.

Your Incoming Inspection Control Plan then was the result of some type of risk analysis; you may not have called it pFMEA....;)

Whether or not receiving inspection is part of the manufacturing process or what a CB auditor thinks of your strategy in this regard, it still makes sense to consider potential failure modes of the operation. See this recent post for what the AIAG FMEA manual says on the subject.

Hi all,

This is what we do for incoming goods in the PFMEA...
see attached example.

Please your comments.
Thank you for posting your pFMEA.

Please note that "Contacting the supplier" is not a prevention control.
The discovery of NC product has been made, so this is per definition a detection control.

Often, all an organization has available are detection controls.

An effort (in the spirit of continual improvement) should be made to move from detection to prevention.

Hello Stijloor,

The material is provided by our customer we use "Contacting the supplier" as a prevention control because we do not buy the material and therefor no direct influence on the delivery.

What do yo suggest for "Current Process Controls Prevention"?

thanks.
