Friends,
The requirement of section 4.3.1 of ISO-14001 (2004) is not only to identify and evaluate environmental aspects of processes and services, but also to identify and evaluate environmental aspects of products.
In the whole discussion in this thread I do not see any critical reference to the ASPECTS of products. Almost 80 % of the environmental impacts of products throughout their life-cylce take place outside the "manufacturing" phase. It is threfore necessary that the ISO-14001 system, where appropriate, captures the significant aspects of products being manufactured by an organization (also applicable to products "transported", "Stored and distributed", "marketed and sold", "serviced" etc. by an organization as appropriate). If I were a certification auditor, I would consider it a major non-conformance if product ASPECTS are not identified and their significance evaluated.
I hope that my friends who follow this thread and others on Aspects will take this into account while establishing a general procedure for identifying and evaluating environmental aspects (of their activities, products and services).
With best regards,
Ramakrishnan
