How to Manage Employees (Operators) - Training for specific Jobs

Not all the workmen have got the same competence neither are trained to perform the same tasks. Some of them can assembly a kind of instrument but not an other one and viceversa (or some of them can perform a particular step in the production line etc.).

I wondering how you manage that!

I've visited a factory where people have got some colored stickers on their badge. Every color has got a different meaning (e.g. the red one means the worker can assembly the X instruments etc.), in this way the manager could understand quickly if the operator is enabled to produce a particular instrument or can perform a particular step.

There are other smart ways to facilitate the management of the people in the work floor?

It would be important to make sure that the employee acknowledges his/her training record with sign-off. If you're concerned that employees will attempt to do work that they aren't qualified or trained to do, this is a personnel issue.

We have over 600 employees at our facility (aircraft manufacturing) and each employee has a signatory and authorization form. Each step in production is required to be stamped on the work order traveller using the operator's personal ID stamp, and the travellers are reviewed during end of day verifications and part of every process audit in Sec. 7.

you need to retain the records for training and ensuring all of people had got training to competence their works; also, you can set up performance management

How about using a competency matrix?

It breaks down the competencies for each task or job and shows:

  • Who is being trained under constant monitoring
  • Who is competent to complete the task and monitor their work
  • Who is competent to train others
It is maintained by the person responsible for assigning competent personnel for the sake of safety and quality.

It is posted so everyone can see it.

Attached is a competency (skills/knowledge) matrix. It is designed for (automotive) internal auditors, but can easily be modified to make it work for any manufacturing (process) or organization.
