How to measure the performance of ISO 9001 consultant?

Are there any established criteria to be performed?

The first thing that came to my mind was their tracking record: The percentage of companies, among all clients he/she served, that successfully and timely established a quality system.

- the consultant already selected
- my manger requested me to monitor and measure their performance

I am trying now to set up a mechanism for evaluating the consultant on the basic of their performance throughout the project phases.

A lot of good consulting in ISO 9001 implementations involves educating people and facilitating consensus amongst those who do the work regarding new or improved process definitions.

The best consultants, IMHO, leave an organization better educated, capable and confident than it was when they arrived, and this is something worth measuring.

I think regular customer satisfaction surveys, formal or informal as necessary, are helpful, asking those with whom the consultant interacts things like

- did you learn something relevant to your job?
- do you feel included in process mapping sessions?
- do you believe the resulting process maps are accurate? Useful?
- is the consultant's behaviour inclusive? Intimidating?

How much money have they saved you (reduced scrap, returns, customer complaints, increased productivity, etc.)

vs.

How much has the consultant cost you (consulting fees, employee interaction time/costs, training time/costs, etc.)


While your people can influence this ratio dramatically, if the consultant is not setting you up with systems to track metrics like this, they are not performing well.

Well, what have you agreed they'd do for you? It's not much good measuring something if you haven't agreed on performance! For example - you might have a 200 mph Bugatti Veyron, but if you are going to measure its performance by how many miles/kilometers it goes on a tank of fuel, it may not meet your expectations.

Typically, some idea of the deliverables and time-frames for those things would be a point of agreement for a client and consultant. Has the consultant provided such a list etc?

How to measure the performance of ISO 9001 consultant?
You should measure it based on mutually agreed upon goals. Let's be honest: why do most people hire an ISO 9001 consultant? To attain (and sometimes maintain) certification to ISO 9001. So, if the consultant assists the organization in achieving that goal, s/he is delivering the results.

So many "ISO consultants" boast on their websites "100% success" in leading organizations to certification.

But, we should ask ourselves: what customers REALLY want? They want reliable, capable suppliers. Certification does not guarantee QMS robustness. So, in my view point, I do agree that when engaging with an "ISO 9001 consultant", the organization should be very clear that they expect their QMS to improve, be more robust, customer satisfaction up, cost of non quality down IN ADDITION to developing a certifiable QMS.

Hi,

For an ISO9001 or AS9100 Consultant the measurables or "performance" of the Consultant will be a function of their credentials and the quality of their work.

First, the Consultant must be able to adequately address all auditable areas of the standard that specifically apply to your organization.

Secondly, the Consultant must be able to properly train everyone that must be involved in Quality and Product Realization.

Thirdly, the Consultant must be able to measure the company after the implementation of the QMS as against the very standard that the organization will judged by by the Registrar.

The Consultant must assist the organization in learning how to find deficiencies, creating a logical plan to correct them, implement the plan, record the results, and create excellence with product realization.

Thank you :thanx: Randy , Deliverables must be established otherwise it will come up a BIG Waste for the company and ended up not to be certified after a long period of time. There should be a list what must accomplished within the period. It can be on a monthly or a weekly basis. An action plan must also be in placed if the said action was not accomplished.
