How to shorten lead time since developing to PPAP1

Hello fellow members,

I'm new here and I need your advice.

I got asked about PPAP lead time so here is the question.

If the project development lead time from customer award to PPAP3 is 20 months but new business award, which I don't even what it is, requires PPAP1 with sample part by 12 months.

How could you shorten lead time from the start to PPAP1 and get sample part signed by 12 months?

It's the automotive part and PPAP1 is about meeting quality requirement and dimension identified in drawing. PPAP3 is about to meet capacity requirement.

It appears that you're using the Ford "phased" PPAP process? Are the requirements you're referring to coming from a customer? If so, have you asked the customer about the requirement?

Jim points in exactly the right direction...work things out with your customer.

The 12months and 20 months are pretty flexible in my experience, so long as you have customer buy in.
I've personally seen it drift to more like 72 months.
Your customer in going to run late (they always do), and it will take them months between month12 submission and approval and signoff...likely more than 8 months...

So the only way to even dream of production scale by month20 is to invest heavily in scale up before you know if the part was approved...that burden (risk) has to be shared...the customer has to put significant skin in the game if your company wants to be remotely responsible to your investors.

Work out what reality actually looks like together with your customer. It will (should) turn into ~20 months of negotiating and cooperating.
