How to spice up the Internal Auditor Training

Internal Auditors have commented that the current training is too long and dry. Anyone have any examples of how they spiced up internal auditor training? This is for ISO TS16949 internal auditing.

Who provided the training? I have provided training on QS 900 and TS 16949 and no-one ever said it was dry - quite the reverse! Was this external training provided by a qualified trainer or something else?

I have training for AS9100 auditors that last three days, my suggestion is to teach them from based on real life examples, collect in plant examples and have them perform the audits. One team is the auditor, the other the auditee..... then I play the wild card. I am on either role, often playing an exaggerated role of the auditee that talks tooooo much or the hard nose auditor that is too serious about everything. It never hurts to have someone else on the audit team help out with these roles, but I find that people learn and remember if they are having a little fun along the way.

Some of these may be good, but I'd caution that what's "fun" may not be effective, because the story can be lost. It may also be "fun" for the instructor, but the skills learned as an auditor are the primary reason for conducting training. Competencies are supposed to be developed. Someone with experience of instructional design should create the training and possibly deliver it. Knowledge and practice in Socratic methods is preferable.

I have used some examples from here at the cove as exercises. first we get some really challenging examples adn we have lot of experts and non-experts providing input opinions and reactions. These will help you as the trainer understand what reactions you will get, how the various answers will effect the auditee, and what the 'best' answer is.

these are maybe not as 'fun' as snowmobiling or a day at Disney land, but the challenge and various aspects that will be discussed tend to get the students fired up and activley participating, thinking and learning...

I don't know about making it "fun", but fun is a relative term. I believe for all training that you have to involve the trainee, not just have them sit and listen the whole time. Remember everyone learns a little different. While some people may be fine just sitting and listening, others need interaction like role playing, other need examples that can be talked through and discussed. Also, if it is the same training year after year that can get a little stale for your veterans, try incorporating new examples or hands on experiences that seem to make it new.
