How to start running a successful 5S program?

1) get your handy camera
2) go to the shop floor and take photos af all your observations (the more the better)
3) as the peeps says, get a "model team"
4) show your photos and how will this be improve
5) train your model team
6) when training ends, show the before and after photos of improvements
8) ask the model team to mirror your training to all concerned
7) then have company wide audit and presentations.

I do similar before and during all 5S transformations. A simple and effective path.
Photography is a very effective tool to focus and communicate the reality that people are steeped in all the time.
Also helpful at the end of the major parts of an overhaul to go back to and remind people what a backslide could look like! In one area where I am now, there are old photos from 2008 posted on a job communication board. The guys would not let me take them down as they have so much pride as to how things are now; "they are a good reminder as to how far we have come!"


In everything you do, involve the people-- don't forget the human side! 5S done right will improve moral incredibly... even if there is resistance at the first 1/4 from some.
5S can be decreed but it needs to be ushered in with some appropriate levels of buy-in... largely cultural dependant so I can't say how much. Last place I helped I was more like a Chef Ramsay because that was what they needed. Do that elsewhere and one can be tarred and feathered!
