How to start with TPM (Total Preventative Maintenance)

hello everybody,
i am new user to this website.
can anyone help me to get some detailed notes about TPM and their pillars in a short and easy understand form.
it is very much useful for me, we are planning to start the tpm in our company.we have 5s activity.
in side by side collecting TPM informations and their complete cheklist.
please anyone help me in this matter.

One word of advice regarding TPM is the use of OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness). Don't try to determine the OEE for everything as that essentially becomes a waste unto itself. Instead use OEE as a tool to determine where the problem stems from: Availability, Performance or Quality.

Let me understand that at what stage of TPM implementation your company is in.
Is your company member of JIPM-TPM club of India, Do you have TPM SECRETARIAT in place.


You can ask any specific questions about TPM .You can use this forum or mail me instead, I would be glad to answer the same.

However a very brief and basic presentation about TPM is attached.

OEE and factor A definition

I am going to post a side question here.
We are working with defining the OEE. A discussion that we hasent solved is the definition of the factor A (Availability).
We have a total time of 24 hours which is our theoretical production time, we have a planned preventive maintenance time for 3 hours and of course we have our unplanned stop time.
Depending on how we choose to define A we can get two factor A numbers
87.5% or 100% (if you calculate the unplanned stoptime to zero).
We are also going to implement SMED, and the first focus would be to look at the 3 hours of planned preventive maintenance.

Dear Sir,

Let me give my input to the point you have raised.

The question is “are you satisfy with planned preventive maintenance time for 3 hours?’”
If the answer is “No” than the figure of 87.5 % is appeared to be correct.
OEE take into account all the potential losses and the shut down/ stoppage for preventing maintenance require treating as losses
We have to make efforts to minimize these. Such jobs should be carefully planned to make them more efficient.
This is why O.E.E. is used in Total Productive Maintenance where the entire organization focuses on eliminating the major losses.

It is also worth mentioning that
O.E.E. should not be used to compare machine-to-machine or process-to-process unless they are identical.
The performance of the machine is compared only to itself over time (historical trending).
O.E.E. is not a measure of “maintenance effectiveness.” It is a measure of the factors that determine “equipment effectiveness.”

"Implementing the Overall Equipment Effectiveness formula in your facility can take on many different forms. It can be used as an analysis and benchmarking tool for either reliability, equipment utilization, or both. Don't let indecision on how to best use OEE become a barrier that prevents you from using it at all. Start out small if necessary, picking your bottleneck to collect the OEE metrics on. Once you see first hand what a valuable tool it is, you can gradually take OEE measurements on other equipment in your facility. ”
