How to state that Calibration Services & Equipment are Traceable to NIST

If you were going to start a calibration service how would you be able to state that your services or equipment calibrations is traceable to NIST? Just have your equipment calibrated by another service that is traceable or do you have to go through the NIST?

Re: How to state that Calibration Services & Equipment are Traceable to NIST?

The way you would present the information on your certificate to a customer is to provide sufficient information to link the calibration of their equipment back to your standard. There should be information on your standard such as its last calibration or next due date, or the traceability number. The traceability number is typically the certificate number from the lab that calibrated your standard.

Generally you do not need to go through NIST, but for some items you may need to, or may need to use a NIST Affiliate, that is, another national lab that for a specific measurement is considered to be NIST.

Beware of the so-called NIST Number. For that to be valid, you will need the specific NIST report that details the calibration of your standard at a specific time.

Hope this helps.

The company we work with certifies that their instruments are calibrated and returned in a state the meets or exceeds the original published specifications. Calibration was performed with standards that are traceable to the NIST.

You might want to check with your calibration lab to see how they support that they are "NIST Traceable". If you go through an audit you will have to prove that you are NIST traceable, and if your cal lab can't prove that they are traceable then you are in trouble.

If the lab you use is ISO 17025 accredited then the traceability search is part of the accreditation, and you can assume that they are NIST traceable

Re: How to state that Calibration Services & Equipment are Traceable to NIST?

Here are a couple of links that might help:

http://www.nist.gov/traceability/

http://www.nist.gov/pml/mercury_traceability.cfm

Basically focus on the "unbroken chain". Also keep in mind, that chain may have two links or twelve. :) The more links you have, the more error (uncertainty) you are adding at each step. So if you are going to set up a calibration service, it will depend on what you will be performing and what kind of standards you purchase. You may (just may) find that sending some standards directly to N.I.S.T. is your best option. Other things may go to a shop (like Fluke) that sends their equipment directly to N.I.S.T.

Traceability through the NIST is desirable, and sending directly to them gives you the highest echelon of the realized SI units, but danged if they aren't slow as molasses and quite expensive.
My Fluke 742-100 resistor standard came back from calibration at Fluke--and their resistance traceability for their standard used was through the NRC (Canada).
As long as the other NMI is a member of a mutual recognition arrangement (MRA) which includes the NIST, it's acceptable.
