A pictograph is simply a pictorial representation of a part, usually with a grid overlayed over it. You use it like a tally sheet to record the number of occurrences AND location of various defects on the product.

The intent of the pictograph is to graphically display any patterns to the location and frequency of defects on the product geometry. This would lead to the questions of:
- Why does the defect occur frequently at location A, but rarely at location B?
- What is different between location A and location B?

I have used it in molding operations to identify locations on the product that repeatedly show defects such as trapped air, etc. This allows you to determine the best location to add a vent to the mold.

an alternate naem fo rthe pictograph is "measles chart"

an example from the automotive industry is a drawing a car door that was getting dinged during manufacturing. the measles chart quickly indicated that the great majority of dings was occuring in a specific location. thsi was occuring with enough precision that we were sure it wasn't human in origin. walking the line quickly showed us where that spot made contact - or could possibly make contact - with something it shouldn't. we then discovered a piece of equipment that was slightly out of alignment and dependign on how the door was oriented at the time the equipment would then impact the door in the exact spot. Realigning the equipment and robusting the fixture orientation and the problem went away...
