It may depend on the size of the company, but I think for most cases once the person is hired it becomes less of an issue. It usually comes up more as a discrimination issue in the hiring process.

Clause 6.2.2 requires organizations to 'determine competencies' and 'competency matrix is the objective evidence of that activity; so unless this document is verified, how one confirms this activity? Competency is not just 'educational qualification', but a combination of academic qualification, experience, training and skills.Competency is llike a 'consummable item' and if one finds from periodic performance appraisal that, this consummable has depleted, standard requires that it should be made up through training interventions or other actions. If we have to verify whether people with competency determined by Org., are available, and competency levels are being maintained; not only compeetency matrix, but also many more relevant docs will have to be gone through. If an Org. is ot prepared to make these docs. available to auditor, how can 'effective auditing' be ensured?

AHI !!!
Bobdoering you wrote the magic worlds! "It usually comes up more as a discrimination issue in the hiring process. ".I'm puzzled; please follow my thoughts and than correct me if I'm wrong..
a) I have to design internally my needs of provision for resources ( human): a table with the education, competence needed, experience and soft skills for each people nedeed
b) Than I have to hire the people looking for them through some public media.(newspapewr, radio or even TV advertisement)

May I use the "education" during the hiring process as parameter for people selection or not ? May I write on the newspaper job advertisements " I'm lookin for at least "high school graduated" to cover the position A", or is it considered a discrimination?
If I have only to write the education request in my internal file and I cannot use it for hiring, I cannot feel any added value coming from the ISO standard....and may be a contraddiction between the standard and the law. I don't want to believe it.

There is no law (in the US) against specifying minimum academic requirements, and it's commonplace for companies to state the requirements in their job advertisements.

I agree. I am not a lawyer, but the training in discrimination and hiring practices (should I say back in the day?) simply looks for things that may be indicative of age. You can ask for education, certification, etc. But, what they had been leery of was date of graduation. Quite frankly, at the end of the day, it really does not matter because it becomes evident in a face to face interview. Most applications ask for education dates so that they can match it up with school records - and background checks are more common. Either way, if there is any issue, just leave out graduation date. After all, you generally do not have to recertify graduation...thank goodness.
