Depending on traffic, speed, etc. I will try to avoid hitting animals, even small ones. Over the years I've clipped a few - chipmunks and squirrels, a raccon, etc. only 1 deer back in 1999 - I'm sure it died, as I was going 70 on interstate 80 in north central PA when it ran into the front left fender of my 98 windstar. Both airbags deployed and major damage ensued to the vehicle about $6000 total of which about 1/2 was getting replacement airbags. No one in the van was injured, just shook up. The van itself once some plastic around the wheel well was cut away proved to be drivable! Switched the passengers with me off to another van so they could continue on a trip for a museum visit and limped back home (about 100 miles) for vehicle repair, which took overlong because the repair shop had difficulty getting the passenger side airbag.
Should have sold/traded the van after that as I've never had a vehicle that attracted more accidents or had more mechanical problems. Overall, there was the deer, driver's side door was backed into while it was parked (the person doing it was nice enough to find me and notify their insurance of the problem), hit from behind while stopped at a traffic light waiting to make a right hand turn, the first transmission went at about 98,000 miles (luckily I had purchased a 100,000 mile warranty) the replacement went at about 145,000 miles, and the replacement for it purchased through AAMCO never did work right. NB - this is the only vehicle I've ever had that needed to have a transmission replaced, and I've racked up a few high milage vehicles over the years.

The picture was taken in central Eskilstuna last week (not by me, though).
