A common mistake. ;)

Our name

Because 'International Organization for Standardization' would have different acronyms in different languages (IOS in English, OIN in French for Organisation internationale de normalisation), our founders decided to give it the short form ISO. ISO is derived from the Greek isos, meaning equal. Whatever the country, whatever the language, the short form of our name is always ISO.

As Jan pointed out, "ISO" isn't an abbreviation for International Standards Organization. If it were an abbreviation it would be IOS (International Organization for Standardization). It's a Greek combining form meaning "equal," chosen because the abbreviation for the name of the organization would be different in different languages.

I'm glad someone brought that up. I was aware of that myself but could not provide censure, hence I knew that (to achieve a perfect score) I had to pick the most predictable choice since I was bound by the parameters of the quiz.

It's a shame that quiz-makers sometimes don't perform the necessary research before constructing these things. Due diligence usually pays off in dividends...

If Number 10 is wrong, then what do you do with the first sentence on page IV of the standard?

?ISO ( the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies).?

Isn?t it safe to assume the first parenthetical item is denoting the phrase it is following? Since this is multiple choice and there is no ?None of the above? option, I would say number 10 is the closest to being correct. Therefor, that choice would be correct.

Yes, I do know that it means "equal." I was confused as to how it is wrong in the scope of what is being asked.

So by this explanation, ISO stands for International Organization for Standardization. The answer to number 10 appears to reflect this. So again, what am I missing? The question didn't ask what ISO was an abbreviation for, it asked what it stood for.

There are a number of things ISO (see below) could refer to but within the scope of this quiz as well as Jan's post of what ISO refers to, I am still not sure why you consider it to be wrong. (Not even sure why I am defending it as it definitely isn't "my" test. :))
