I have client certified to ISO 9001:2015. Their scope includes manufacturing of Play Dough for creative arts. My question is what is the relevant IAF Code for Play Dough?
Can this be classified as IAF Code 12, 14 or 23?
The relevant IAF code for the manufacture of play dough (a non-toxic, modeling compound used for creative arts, typically made from water, flour/salt, and other simple ingredients, sometimes with added colorants or preservatives) is IAF Code 23 ("Manufacturing not elsewhere classified").This fits because play dough falls under miscellaneous manufacturing activities not specifically covered in other dedicated codes. It aligns with NACE categories like 32.99 ("Other manufacturing n.e.c.") or similar "not elsewhere classified" groupings, which include toys, games, and related creative/art products like modeling compounds. Why not the other options you mentioned?
IAF Code 12 ("Chemicals, chemical products and fibres") — This covers basic chemicals, petrochemicals, fibers, and related industrial products. While play dough involves some chemical additives (e.g., preservatives or colorants), its primary nature is as a finished consumer/creative product, not a chemical substance. It doesn't match the sector's focus on industrial chemicals.
IAF Code 14 ("Rubber and plastic products") — This applies to vulcanized rubber, synthetic plastics, molded/extruded plastic items, etc. Play dough is not a rubber or plastic product; it's a soft, water-based, moldable paste (often salt/flour-based), not derived from polymeric/plastic manufacturing processes.
