Does anyone know where the number 16949 came from?
The closest thing I've seen to the answer is posted here.

SteelWoman,

That's where I was looking and didn't see it. Here's what I see in the "Rules" though:
Decertification Process: actions or decisions to be taken by the certification body when events occur indicating that the initial conditions of the issue of the ISO/TS 16949:2002 certificate to an organization are no longer satisfied. The starting point could be information coming from the organization (significant changes of ownership, interruption of activity...), from the certification body (major nonconformity observed during an audit, delayed surveillance audits requested by the organization, non-compliance with a clause of the certification contract by the organization...), from an ISO/TS 16949:2002 recognizing customer (poor quality performance of the organization...) or from claims from other customers of the organization or information from the field
That says to me that major nonconformities might, but not minors...

Ts 16949

The 16949 is a sequential numbering for ISO series and that means there were 16948 standards before this one. Imagine when the 9000 series was started and think of how many have been created as sector specifics since then. WOW :ko:

Decertification

Those are the rules - any nonconformity=start of decertification. Don't think your auditors are obligated to walk around with a screwdriver in your pocket so they can take plaques off the wall as they leave, though. You still have 3 months to take corrective action and have it verified before you lose your certificate, and if the required corrective action takes longer the possibility exists of getting an extension from the IAOB. The "probation" system under QS was seriously abused, and CBs were regarded as not doing a good enough job of verifying CAs, so this is the auto industry's reaction.

Not only were the CB's not doing there job effectively, DCX/Ford/GM were not exercising control over the accredtation bodies and/or CB's.

See the FAQ's at www.iaob.org

My understanding (directly from IAOB) is that the sanctioned intrepretations will not be as extensive as that for QS 9000. The FAQ's will contain more information and intrepretations.

Sidney, thanks for the information on the updates - I usually check monthly near the beginning of the month, and probably would not have become aware of them until May.
Regards,
Kevin
