IATF 16949:2016 Cl. 7.2.3 Internal Auditor Competency Requirements

#31
Just found yet another nc from a CB auditor who thinks the internal auditors MUST be IATF trained! Someone needs to stop the insanity!

The OE's are increasing frustrated by bogus CB audit findings several degrees removed from the real issues of product quality being experienced by the car makers...

Well they wrote the thing and can stop the madness anytime they choose. But they don't. In my view a lot of this comes from the top down. I'll bet the CB set that policy because they where questioned during their accreditation review. Easier to require a certificate to show the next guy than prove competence.

Following trainings would help to gain necessary competence and qualify as Internal auditor for IAF16949.

Internal auditor training for IATF16949:2016, ISO 9001:2015

Training on core tools (MSA, SPC, PPAP, FMEA, SPC, APQP & Control Plan).

Training on customer specific requirements.

But, competence evaluation is required prior to selection as an Internal auditor (Refer clause 7.2.3 for competency requirements) even after training.

Thanks,
Amit
Hi,

I have never seen an explicit training of "Customer Specific Requirement". At least not as a general and official training as the others that are you mentioning in your list. If you have information it would be great if you share.

Warm regards

Some companies have their own CSR training. We have a customer who set up a whole web portal where we login an work thru a training program every time they update their requirements. It even prints us a certificate.

You will need to complete some sort of training that provides you with all the elements to become an auditor. This training could be from an external company offering a complete training program; or it could come from a training program internally to your company.

If you don't have anything within the company, then seeking outside training is the way to go.

Good day @millie6901 ;
As you can see from the standard, it defines two methods that SHALL be used...
f) Executing a minimum number of audits per year as defined by the organization...
A: Simple. In your documented internal audit process or your documented process for competency, identify what your organization determines as "minimum number of audits per year..."
g) Maintain knowledge...
A: This can be done via innumerable ways. ..
- Having the auditors subscribe to (and read) IATF and ISO websites for newsletters and updates
- Periodic outside or in-house auditor training (either by paid resource or one of your own in-house SME)
- Having your auditors subscribe to (and read) posts on sites such as elsmar.com and/or other relevant forums.
- Having your CURRENT internal auditors teach /train new internal auditors (no better way to learn than to teach).
- Etc...etc..etc...etc...etc...

Hope this helps.
Be well.

To add on a bit more specific - it depends on how many audits you have and how many auditors you have. Say you have 60 audits / year and 10 auditors. You might decide something like 1 audit per quarter; or 3 audits per year.

Having done this for 20+ years now...most auditors can maintain a decent level of proficiency doing 1-3 audits per year.

Great stuff here above - adds: AQS articles; do refreshes on topics - use data from your audit program to indicate weakness. e.g. Last year we held a mass refresh on how to write a good/solid finding(non-conformance) so that it provides the auditees and the organization complete information; Listening skills, writing skills; Lynda.com if you have access; learn basics about other standards; etc
