IATF 16949 9.2.2.1 - How often do we have to audit entire IATF Manual

In the past automotive companies I have worked when auditing the Quality System, whether it was TS 16949, or VDA6.3 we did not have to audit every single element(section) annually. I have worked at a company a year now and one of my responsibilities was to develop an Internal Audit program, and I have been teaching everyone that we can do this standard over a 3- year period (like what IATF does). Our corporate office is overseas, and I have been telling them we can do the entire standard over a 3-yr interval; as I have been revising the corporate procedure (which states all elements are to be done annually). They let me know yesterday that we do in fact have to audit the entire system annually!

We have our 3rd IATF audit this summer, and we actually just started auditing IATF (2 quarters total now)...I am thinking I am going to for sure get a NC for this as the entire manual is not audited. The first 2 years we were IATF registered nothing was internally audited (except LPA and 5S but not to the IATF standard), and I knew this would be one of my tasks, but this could be a full time job if this is expected.

Is this even realistic for automotive companies to audit the entire standard annually? Please provide feedback...

You don't have to audit to the standard at all, if the IATF standard is what you refer to as the "manual." You should be doing internal audits against your company's own requirements, and it should be assumed that those requirements are in line with and satisfy the IATF requirements.

9.2.2.2 of 16949 requires that you audit each of your processes to 16949 on a 3 year cycle (that is, full coverage of the system assured over three years) as the minimum. Prior to 16949:2016, a number of customer specific requirements called for a 1 year cycle, so it wouldn't surprise me if an auditor expects 1 year. My own practice is to cover critical processes once per year, and less critical every 3 years.

What is tricky is to show how you applied "all" of 16949 to each process. Somewhere along the way you want to have an audit matrix that shows which clauses of 16949 you considered in auditing each specific process.

While that is true (and I agree), it's not true. Some auditors may want to see evidence that you have met 9.2.1 a, 2 -- which requires auditing to the requirements of the standard. As well as IATF 9.2.2.2 which specifically mentions verification of compliance with the IATF standard. Obviously, you can break the internal audits into two parts if you want so an auditor well versed in the standard can take care of that part. We have included it as a part of the audit report so my internal auditors are learning the standard.

It is not perfect, but very helpful. I don't feel comfortable posting publically, but if I could get your email i could send. You would want to modify for your processes as each organization is different.
