IATF 16949 Cl. 4.4.1.1, 8.4.2.2, 8.6.5 - Statutory and Regulatory Requirements

#1
Hello, Can someone comment on which statutory / regulatory requirements are in the scope of these clauses? I saw a couple examples in a similar thread (e.g. check IMDS, reach and conflict minerals compliance) and am familiar with NHTSA, OSHA, but are there others about which we should be concerned?

How would one go about determining the regulatory requirements of a particular country? To what level / scope is expected (it could be taken to extremes)? What happens when the regulations conflict from one country to the next? Are there other considerations to be taken into account?

Any assistance or other suggestions are deeply appreciated.

regulatory requirement are necessary when you are selling a product into a country. most countries, depending on which part you are selling, have specific regulations. most companies would hire a regulatory affair person to study all the requirements to see which are applicable in the market that you are planning to sell and advise manufacturing how to conform accordingly

We are in the same situation as Qaulbug - not knowing exactly where to look. We supply automotive suspension components, which are deemed as "safety critical" in most cases. As Qualbug says, we do look at the normal sources of information such as the part drawing, IMDS, conflict minerals, applicable engineering specifications, etc.

What other governing bodies or sources we need to consider when determining "statutory and regulatory requirements"....?

In a previous life I was an Environmental Management Rep. and I did use a 3rd party source to stay informed of the latest changes in statutory and regulatory requirements....and even with this resource it was somewhat labor intensive to stay current.

Boxer, Qualbug,
My interpretation is if you manufacture a tyre then there is specific national (statutory) legislation that it must comply to, that legislation varies dependant on the countries its sold in. However we don't manufacture tyres so I am making an assumption /guessing.

If your products are produced to a customer drawing then that drawing should state what requirements are. If your product expertise means that you believe the spec / drawing is incorrect then surely you're obliged to inform the customer, other than that I can't see that you can be wrong if you are complying to a customer's drawing.

You have to ask your client where cars with your products are sold. You need to fullfil ALL regulations from ALL countries which will be pointed by your customer.

For example VW Group in CSR's have such statement: "8.6.5 Statutory and regulatory conformity. It is to expect a worldwide use if certain destinations were not specifically restricted by VW Group".

If you sell for European Union market it is good to start looking for regulations in directive 46/2007/EC on page 82.

Hi!

I'm looking for legislation requirements that could apply to me. We're selling tubes for steering and suspension applications all over the world. How could I look for this applicable legislation? I'm so lost I don't know where to start looking for / asking.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Qualbug. To the first question, I remember the Department of Transportation had some labeling requirements for vacuum tube assemblies.
