IATF 16949 Cl. 8.4.2.5 - Supplier Development Type and Extent

Guys I have a problem to understand the new requirement. The clause 8.4.2.5 states:

The organization shall determine the priority, type, extent, and timing of required supplier development actions for its active suppliers.

I understand this development is based on the supplier's performance, auditor findings ect. But I have a question on the development type and extent, what's the development type and extent? can some one explain to me?

Thank you in advance.

Sounds to me like it is wiggle room. They want everyone to be TS per the standard. But that is completely unachievable. So it would allow customers to determine what they really need. Some my need TS cert. Some may need annual customer audits. Some may just need a phone call and a self audit. Etc.

Don't read too much into the wording. This is a rather simple clause.

It means that you need to determine how you develop your suppliers.

Priority: Priority of Which Suppliers or What they need to improve/develop upon
Type: What they need to improve upon
Extent: How much they need to improve - a little, a lot
Timing: When you expect them to demonstrate the improvement
