IATF 16949 Line and Dock Auditor Competency Requirements

Hello everyone,

I have a concern about one of the requirements of the new standard, IATF 16949:2016.

Will line/dock auditors have to show competency to the requirements given in 7.2.3?

We just initiated line and dock auditors.

The line auditors will basically be verifying that the operators are following their work instructions. They will also be doing a sampling of their finished goods to evaluate if the product meets customer requirements.

The dock auditors will be doing sampling of finished goods in the warehouse to validate that the product meets customer requirements.


With that said, even though they are not the Internal QMS systems auditor, will they still have to show competency and vast knowledge in the standard?

Yes it sounds like it. It applies to manufacturing process auditors and product auditors as well as qms auditors. Good luck.

They need to be competent in performing product audits. There is nothing in IATF that states that they need to have "vast knowledge" of the standard.

But then again; wouldn't you expect ALL employees to be competent in their assigned tasks?

7.2.3 has a bunch of requirements of dubious need for a simple product audit.

Too many things were missed with product audits, hence problems at customers, hence strengthened requirements. Makes sense, no?
