IATF 16949 manufacturing cell in ISO 9001 factory?

While Golfman's points are correct, my experiences make me believe that comingling actions in an area (this machine uses the IATF process while the one physically next to it does not would create more work and take more resources keeping things straight than would physically grouping the process/equipment/people in a clearly identified area.

Indeed it is process, not site...but most people think in physical areas. Just my recommendation, not a requirement.

That's pretty much what I thought... The supporting processes will be governed by IATF, but we will in effect be able to run the automotive cell as it's own IATF entity. It can get confusing in apartments like QA which would probably be best run in line with IATF so save issues further on down the line.

Right but only apply IATF to IATF. For example, IATF has specific requirements regarding MSAs. If you have gages in QA that don't get used on automotive parts, don't bother doing IATF style MSAs on them. It's a waste of time.

There lies another issue, gauges! That'll be a minefield as we have 100's of gauges that are used across the company (thread gauges, verniers, mics etc) and also 3 CMM's one of which was bought in specially to measure a certain item that is used on both road and race cars. Gauges like thread gauges are attribute and are easy to deal with, CMM's are ok as we can easily conduct GR&R on those, as there's only 3 of them. It's all the other gauges.

Today I tell operator that 0,1 mm deviation is not a problem as it goes to ISO customer, while tomorrow I'm going mad about 0,01 mm, because it's IATF. One day I pick up steel material supplier from aliexpress, next day I am surprised that someone asked about its ISO 9001 certificate.
It's easy to manage.

It is. But you have to go the the most restrictive use. If it is a duel use part -- both auto and racing, then the auto requirements take over. If the part doesn't touch auto, then do what you want.

Our client has both IAFT and non-IAFT requirement production, with seperate production cells in different parts of the factory - with various barriers, full height wall or half height wall or mental barriers. Final production and test equipment is unique to the different lines although there is some cross over in presses, benders etc. CB was happy with this.
