Hey guys, I was going through IATF 16949 Clause 8.3 - Design and Development.

We are a design responsible organisation and unfortunately or fortunately, we need to maintain compliance for the entire 8.3 clause.

I had a few doubts regarding certain sub-clauses in this Clause 8.3. Just wanted to know how different people interpret. Please feel free to post your views and opinions about the certain sub-clauses as below.

Clause 8.3.2 - Design and development planning
h. Requirements for subsequent provision of products and service - Does this talk about post delivery requirements?

Clause 8.3.3 - Design and development inputs
Conflicting design and development inputs shall be resolved - Can anyone give me an example of what a conflicting design input can be and what would be one of the ways to resolving them?

Clause 8.3.5 - Design and development outputs
d. specify the characteristics of the products and services that are essential for their intended purpose and their safe and proper provision - Can the compliance document for this be the engineering drawings and specification sheets, or does it mean something deeper than this?

Clause 8.3.5.2 - Manufacturing process design outputs
k. process approval acceptance criteria - These are your quality goals, am I right?

I do love "Quality-speak"...I'll have a go at translating, others may translate differently...

Clause 8.3.2 - Design and development planning
h. Requirements for subsequent provision of products and service - Does this talk about post delivery requirements?
Part of the "Design process" should be recognition that when "design" is done, you actually have to make the stuff...in sufficient quantity.
What is "required" to make the stuff "subsequent" to the "design process"?

Clause 8.3.3 - Design and development inputs
Conflicting design and development inputs shall be resolved - Can anyone give me an example of what a conflicting design input can be and what would be one of the ways to resolving them?
Had a customer ask for color coding of two jet black pastes. What color do you add to black to turn it green?
The requirement for the material, and the requirement for the color were in conflict...one of them had to change or be removed...

Clause 8.3.5 - Design and development outputs
d. specify the characteristics of the products and services that are essential for their intended purpose and their safe and proper provision - Can the compliance document for this be the engineering drawings and specification sheets, or does it mean something deeper than this?
You made a thing that does stuff.
Some of the features of the thing are critical to do the "stuff".
Some of it is not.
Which parts are critical for the thing to perform its intended purpose?
A wheel has to be round...but it doesn't matter what color it is in order to turn.

Clause 8.3.5.2 - Manufacturing process design outputs
k. process approval acceptance criteria - These are your quality goals, am I right?
When you are all done your design process...how do you know you are done?
You know it because you met all of the process approval acceptance criteria.
These would be the goals toward which you were designing...both product and process.
(I would also consider any and all mutually agreed customer requirements in this one...)
These would be (in my parlance) "Design goals"...not quality goals...maybe the same thing in your wording...

Mihir,

Designers translate customer needs into service and product requirements.

Knowing this makes it easier to answer your questions:

8.3.2 - Yes

8.3.3 - Light and strong, durable and inexpensive = the essence of an working engineer’s life.

8.3.5 - Yes, and don’t forget the User Manual

8.3.5.2 - No, these are the process control criteria (Quality goals are too late!)

Best wishes,

John

Thanks for the clarifications John.

So I can assume that process approval criteria are the verification of your quality goals, more specifically the process capability studies that enable you to find out whether your process is stable or not.

Thanks @Ninja. Fully agree with 1, 2 and 3. But regarding point 4, I would tend to agree with John, because this is a stage which is beyond setting goals. You would need to verify whether you have achieved the goals or not. Something I should have thought of before asking the question haha

General remark - review of ISO requirement leaving IATF one aside can be tricky. Look at whole picture made by ISO&IATF requirements.
Clause 8.3.2 - Design and development planning
h. Requirements for subsequent provision of products and service - Does this talk about post delivery requirements?
Key words here are "subsequent provision".
First information is related to 4.4.1 b). Process of design and development shall be followed (process sequence) by process of provision of product (manufacturing/production) done according to 8.5.1
Second information is outputs of design and development process shall be requirements used for implementing process of product provision under controlled conditions, e.g. control plan, packing specification.
Clause 8.3.3 - Design and development inputs
Conflicting design and development inputs shall be resolved - Can anyone give me an example of what a conflicting design input can be and what would be one of the ways to resolving them?
It originates in 8.2.3.1 where items a) to e) show requirement sources. As there are many sources, so it can happen that requirements related to the same subjects are different. You have to determine severity level of conflicting requirements and decide which one is more important and finally would be considered during design and development. Example can be packaging gross weight for hand carry, where customer requirement exceeds local statutory requirements. So you have to resolve it - agree with customer that packaging gross weight would be lower or design manufacturing process in a different manner, to allow handling of higher gross weight packaging.
Clause 8.3.5 - Design and development outputs
d. specify the characteristics of the products and services that are essential for their intended purpose and their safe and proper provision - Can the compliance document for this be the engineering drawings and specification sheets, or does it mean something deeper than this?
This says mainly, that during design and development you shall determine critical items for product and manufacturing process - automotive industry calls them special/critical characteristics.
Clause 8.3.5.2 - Manufacturing process design outputs
k. process approval acceptance criteria - These are your quality goals, am I right?
Required values for e.g. Cp, Cpk, capacity, defect ratio.
