You can try! A register doesn't have to have auditors with ISO 9001:2015 Lead auditor training! It's not required anywhere, but their choice. I rather doubt that unless the auditor is new, the register is going to pay an auditor (may be on contract) to attend a class for something they know how to do - audit. As for Lean etc. don't hold your breathe...

Joshmo is correct about auditor training. I would add that I have been hearing that some CB’s are no longer requiring auditors to obtain Exemplar or IRCA cards unless required by an ICOP group.

That happened many years ago.

My company has taken its management system to a new path-Continuous Improvement. Would you recommend that I contact the CB and ask for an auditor with a LEAN and six sigma background- in addition to the ISO9001:2015 Lead Auditor training to conduct the surveillance audit next year?
Thanks.
In an ideal world, yes. However, if we are not careful we will make it almost impossible to select a competent auditor for each job and then CB's will not be able to employ full time auditors because they don't have sufficient work to justify their salary.

A big question here is what you expect of the auditor. Auditors can give "Observations", but remember they can NOT consult so they are quite limited in any feedback they can give you.

The only thing I expect from an auditor is to understand how ISO9001:2015 aligns with our Continuous Improvement Initiative. For example our objectives are monitored daily on the stand up meetings coordinated by every department. Someone who has some LEAN six sigma background might have given us some positive comments about how our continuous improvement initiatives impacted our customer. We did not have any customer complaints for the last year and a half and our KPI's are high. Our risk-based thinking was defined in the SIPOC (my favorite Quality tool by the way). After consulting with one of the moderator here at the Cove, the comment was we did not blew up the standard. IMHO we could use an auditor with the caliber of the consultants and moderators here at Elsmar Cove.

The auditor that I had made up his own SHALL some of them based on the old ISO9001:2008 standard. When I asked the auditor to summarized the finding by stating the requirement first, he did not do it. I had to wait for the audit report to truly understand what the issues were.

I have been out of the CB Auditing for awhile, but as I remember, we had to provide the results at the closing meeting and open for discussions. Maybe that changed.
