IE 7 Beta - your experience?

Well, I spent an entirely unsatisfactory Sunday downloading, installing, multi-crashing, and finally having to pull the plug to regain control of my machine so I could remove the Beta offered by MS and touted by several (formerly) respected computer journalists.

What a disappointment. It was touted to be like Firefox, only better. Not my experience! All in all, I think I lost about five hours out of my life futzing with it before I gave up.

Although I use Firefox at home and don't plan on switching, I couldn't resist having a look at the IE7 public beta a few weeks ago. My experience was much like yours, only not as protracted. Couldn't get it to run at all, and it screwed everything up.

Personally, I have not even considered installing it yet, and I am not likley to do so until it has reached final release status plus a couple of updates... I have said before that a Mozilla beta usually is far more stable than MS final releases... That statement still seems valid.

Several people known to have their act together have warned me in no uncertain terms from touching it, and your experiences seem to prove their point.

Besides, the current FF & Opera versions both work just fine, and if MS have added even more code to that bloated behemoth Explorer.... Well, I just get the feeling that it would be better to rewrite it from scratch, that's all...

I use Firefox at home.
I'll upgrade to IE 7 at work when the IT guy does it for me.
Then I'll consider upgrading at home.

Just got the new issue of MaximumPC a few days ago, with a less-than-glowing review of Vista in general, including IE7.

I'll stay w/ my FireFox, thanks...

I just bought a new laptop, and a lot of people thinking about buying computers right now are wondering whether they should wait for Vista to be released. I never gave it a second thought. XP is easily the most stable OS Microsoft has ever produced, and it's still being patched on a regular basis. Why would I want to start the whole process over again, especially with an OS that's significantly different? No thank you. The fact that IE7 is hugely unready at this late date should be seen as fair warning.

I installed it a few months ago. I had no problems getting it running, but I didn't like the user interface or the memory management. Memory management was actually the one area where IE stood a chance to take back ground from FF. There are a lot of FF users (including myself) who complain of massive memory use. Any pages with Flash 8 send my laptop into overdrive and my fan screaming. I was hoping IE7 would be better, but it's just as bad.

There is one positive note. The IE team has done a great job of making IE7 W3C compliant for the latest HTML, XHTML, and CSS standards. While this may seem irrelevant to many people, the net effect is that web developers all over the world will have to spend less time tweaking web pages to look good on multiple browsers. The amount of labor wasted on this worldwide is significant.
