IEC 62368-1 / Electrical Energy Source vs. Power Source?

Hi,

I'm coming from very little safety background, and am trying to wrap my head around the practical differences in IEC 62368-1 of a Power Source vs. a Electrical Energy Source.

I'm most confused in a case where we have a device that is powered from AC / DC adapter (5V, 1A), charges from a USB input, and has an internal LiPo battery (3.7V, 2A).

In some cases, I've seen the USB input & battery classified as an ES1 and PS1 source. How could this be correct?

My uninitiated reading of the standards would be that the AC Adapter / DC output would be the electrical energy source. I would think the LiPo battery would then be the Power Source?

I've looked a number of EN 62368 test reports, and I've seen a really wide divergence for these types of embedded devices in what exact component is classified as the ES or PS.

Does anyone have some high-level guidance on where the ES begins and ends, and then where the PS begins and ends?

Hello.

IEC 62368-1 defines energy sources depening on the nature of the hazard or type of injury that they may cuause to the user.

So, it is stated various types:

Electrical source is related to risk of electrical shock
Power source is related to risk of fire.


Other energy sources could be:
-Mechanical energy sources
-Radiation type source
-Chemical energy source
-Thermal energy source

Regarding to your specific question:

Electrical sources are classified taking in account only avalable voltage and current of the circuit under consideration.

Power sources are classified taking in account the total available power that the relevant circuit may supply.

They are independent classifications. For example: Your battery could be at same time ES1 ( more or less similar to SELV) and PS1 if the available power that it can supply is less than certain limit (simplifyng a lot, the limit would be 15W for PS1), but could be ES1 and PS2/PS3 if the total amount of available power that can supply is higher).

Similar procedure can be applied to the AC/DC adapter or any other energy source.

The battery output can be PS1 due to protection circuitry, but there are additional requirements in Annex - for example a Lithium Ion battery must have a Fire Enclosure due to the electrolyte - though this Fire Enclosure might already be provided by the battery case
