ISO’s Central Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland, which coordinates the organization’s network of national standards institutes in some 160 countries, has just been re-certified for the fourth time to ISO 9001 (quality management) and achieved certification for the first time to ISO 14001 (environmental management).

ISO Secretary-General Rob Steele (centre) and Deputy Secretary-General Kevin McKinley are presented with the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certificates by Mr. Léandre Berclaz, lead auditor of certification body SQS. (Photo: ISO/Egger)

The certificates were presented on 14 April to ISO Secretary-General, Rob Steele, who comments: “Certification is not a requirement of ISO 9001 or ISO 14001, but with more than a million organizations around the world certified to one or other, or both, of the standards, ISO Central Secretariat was honour bound to show that it could take its own medicine. I’m proud of the way our 160 employees have responded to the challenge.

“At the same time, the important thing is not the certificate on the wall, but our commitment to continual improvement in serving our customers and stakeholders better.”

The ISO Central Secretariat is the hub of a system including 159 national standards institutes and nearly 3 300 technical bodies, responsible for a current portfolio of more than 18 600 International Standards for business, government and society.

Its activities include coordinating the standards-development system, the final editing and publication of ISO standards, and distributing and promoting them, along with a range of services, such as training, for ISO’s national members. Both certifications cover the scope of the ISO Central Secretariat’s work, including publishing and of other services.

The Central Secretariat first achieved ISO 9002 certification in May 1996, since migrating to ISO 9001. Among environmental impacts reduced by implementing an ISO 14001 system are reduced consumption of paper and energy. A major objective is to reduce its carbon footprint by 4 % over the 2009-2014 period

That actually is pretty simple.

ANSI can self declare to ISO9001. Why? They cannot first accredit an ISO9001 Registrar and then have that Registrar register ANSI for ISO9001.

Besides, ANSI is evaluated by IAF and PAC (a recognized Region) under ISO/IEC 17011 so there is sufficient oversight. Side note, ANSI is now one of three accrediting bodies based in the US that are Signatory to the IAF and/or recognized Region MLAs.

ANSI is also a standards development body that could be certified for that scope just like ISO did, should they want to. Technically speaking ANSI does not accredit CB's; ANAB does. ANSI-ASQ NATIONAL ACCREDITATION BODY.

Further IAF DOES NOT perform any oversight of AB's. There is a peer review process amongst AB's.

Added in edit:
So - which registrar did they use? Please don't say "Perry Johnson!"(I see IQ Net on the certificate, but an auditor from SQS is present. Were there two different registrars?)
SQS is the certification body. The CB is a member of IQNet - a 'club' of CBs who agree to recognize each other's certificates.

IQNet - a 'club' of CBs who agree to recognize each other's certificates.
IQNet could also be a meaningless, valueless relic. At the end of the day, the people who need to recognize a certificate is the user, not the certified company, not another CB, not Billy Bob and Mary Joe. Just one more example of how ISOgnorance leads to ISOpreyeing and ISOwaste of money... why the global CB's are not members of IQNet?
