I'm a Quality manager of an aerospace company with ISO9001 and AS9100. We have wanted to get ISO14001 for a few years now and finally 2009 budget came out and I was able to higher an EMS manager.... long story short, we've not found one that we liked... The ball is now in my court as people are saying why don't I do it :agree1:

I'm now trying to put together a wish list for me to be able to do it...

Can anybody out there suggest the minimum training requirements recomended for somebody with a lot of quality experience but no environmental experience... I intend on taking on another quality engineer to take on soem of my existing work to carry out this function.

Also, would my new suggested title be Quality and Environmental Manager... or can one of you think up a great, funny and rediculous title to put forward??? (Gotta add some humour when you are about to increase your already massive work load )

Grand Poobah of Certification.

Training: Do you have Environmental Engineers currently? Implementation is fairly intuitive if you have already done quaity systems in the past. BUT, the whole regulatory/statutory side of things is a little different, and I found that most people just confused me with the aspects/impacts, targets and objectives, where I would have been OK if I would have just listened to my own judgement. There are implementation classes, I'd think about going to one, and maybe an auditing class later on (or delegate it, you are the Grand Poobah of Certification now.)

Grand Poobah of Certification I like this :lmao:

I am looking into doing a 1 day foundation course followed by a 2 day auditing course.

We do not have any environmental engineers but my plan is to swat up, train internal auditors (process owners checking each other) and maybe get a contractor in to help write the initial procedures for me to then maintain?!?

Hi Phiobi,

There are plenty of taster / introductory courses available within the UK. Certainly the main certification bodies run them (BSI, for example, offer a number of short EMS sessions) and I'm sure there are many more available. I'd advise sourcing and attending the most appropriate one for your needs before making a definite decision here. At least then you'll have significantly more background info to assist you when making such an important decision.

As for the job title - how about QUEEN?

Quality United with Environmental Extras Numpty

Ideal if you're a lady. However, may attract some odd looks when you hand out your business cards if you're a bloke...!

I am looking into a few things on offer.

How about:

Person
Responsible for
Inspection
Non-conformances
Customer satisfaction and
Environmental Issues
P.R.I.N.C.E would look better on a business card I think:biglaugh:

As part of my build up to this if have started to read:
ISO 14001 Environmental Systems Handbook (Paperback)

by Ken Whitelaw

Anybody got any views on this or any other books that might be worth a read?

It would be much better if you just used Annex "A" and maybe got a copy of ISO 14004:2004

Most of the books created by people that have had a revelation just regurgitate what's already been written with a bit of extra fluff
