IMDS (International Material Data System) - Is there a minimum weight?

Hi there,
new to IMDS and to this forum. A new automotive customer asked us for IMDS for our cabling assembly. The weight of the whole cabling is 20g only (microconnectors). Does exists a rule for a minimum weight of an assembly wich permits to not produce IMDS? I ask this because, for a similar cabling, another automotive customer said to us that, for the small weight (20g), we have not to produce an IMDS coding.
Is it right? Or it depends on the final weight of the product?

In general, there is no minimum weight requirement in IMDS. So an IMDS is needed. Small parts (e.g. fasteners) can contain restricted substances (e.g lead or cadmium plating) and must be declared.

If your customer waves the requirement, please keep that as part of your records forever.

Hi,

We make small springs (most under 10 grams) for primarily the automotive industry and we have never been told that we do not have to report because they don't weigh much. They even reject submissions if I forget to add the minuscule amount of non-hazardous oil coating which is usually under .001 grams per part.

Hi!

IMDS decimal precision is, I believe, up to 1 millionth of a gram. A recent automotive directive requires the mass reported for the full assembly to be as accurate as possible and should be within 1-2% of the math model mass.

I've got a small u-nut that I need to add as a component for an assembly. It is an off the shelf item. When I asked the manufacturer, they said they cannot provide MDS, but offered a material data sheet only.
I was wondering, too, if it is small enough (5g) to exclude it. Not the case.

Don't know how I'm going to address this....

There is no minimum weight limit. You have to include it. Below 5g, you do not have to include norms/standards.

What does the material data sheet say? What material? Any plating? What does your drawing specify?

Yes, getting the material data sheet from the manufacturer today.
Now, if I've got the material certification from the supplier, can I enter the MDS for this component myself? Even though they seem to supply fasteners, etc. for the automotive industry exclusively, they seem to be IMDS-shy.


What does your drawing specify?
Awww.. GM likes to keep us guessing. They haven't yet provided a print for the part we're making or the clip I'm asking about. They just sent an informal email stating to use this GM part number u-nut.

Yes, if you have the material composition from the supplier, you can enter that yourself or use the standard materials (published by IMDS, ILI or Stahl und Eisenlist). Second option is preferred.

I'm new to this too but I just find any MDS that matches material grade whether entered by supplier, the committees or others. For example if I buy a processed item in a grade of steel I'll use a likely source of the steel that supplied my supplier or further up the chain. I figure tata steel in my case. A nice circle then, tata steel taking a circular route into a tata vehicle via many middlemen!!
I'm guessing the main deal with imds is an accurate description of everything going into a vehicle. I hope so anyway, otherwise I've messed up.
With weight there's no minimum I've noticed and I've entered it in low grammes many a time. There is a maximum amount of the composition that can be put down as propriety and doesn't need to be defined I think. Could this be used to "cover" any gaps in the composition of a component that can't be identified due to lack of supplier information?
