I think you would add it during your quote review at your risk management process. Surely before your company accepts any jobs,your company evaluates which suppliers to use prior to committing to a particular supplier. You determine the risk of using them and once you have decided to accept the risk, you manage it to minimize them.There are many things you evaluate as far as risk...(etc. price, reliability, quality system, references). You can add it to your quote process (should already be there). Just because it is called out on 7.4.1f does not mean you have to wait until you actually purchase a service or product to determine the risks. You just need to demonstrate that somewhere in your process you have "determined and managed the risk" of choosing to use a supplier.

Thanks AS9100 Lady. Similar shops it sounds like. Risk assessment is a documented part of our quote/contract review. We may already have it covered, I guess. I thought they would be looking for OE specifically for Supplier risk management. When is AS9101d scheduled for release? We're interested in the audit criteria for Risk. As is everybody else.....:frust:

I thought they would be looking for OE specifically for Supplier risk management. When is AS9101d scheduled for release? We're interested in the audit criteria for Risk. I tried keeping it as simple as possible. We are too small to make this into a big fiasco. I made a flow chart with the help of members from here givine me input (see attachment) to show our actual process of a quote because this is where we evaluate ALL risk first hand. You do not need to go into detail as long as you are actually doing it. When a purchase order comes in, a label is affixed to it. All personnel that reviews it (purchasing, finance, qc, etc) initials label in the appropriate location. On top of this label, it says "ALL RISKS ACCEPTED" I review every document and ensure all is per customer requirements and then make the final sign-off. As far as AS9101 Revision D I am not sure when it will be released, but I believe companies will not be audited to AS9100 Rev C until perhaps 2011, because auditors need to be trained first. This has not completely happened yet. Since I still have time, if I find any other risks I can add it to flow chart the I will revise accordingly. I hope this helps.

I've been reading over the posts. Part of covering risk in product realization seems to me to also cover contingency plans (How do you keep making product if you have eg. fire, flood, strike, illnesses), long lead times (either in getting raw material or in scheduling), maybe in A.P.Q.P to evaluate new technology risks (new machinery, software, measuring instruments), delivery. Might require evaluation of risks in relation to resources available, customer changes, project realization, etc. How are you going to manage critical items? Then you also need to lead into monitoring & measurement of your processes and products (8.2.3/8.2.4), analysis of your data (8.4) and Improvement (8.5 continual, corrective and preventive action).
I am sure there is more like project management.
I'll keep following the posts to see what everyone thinks and suggests. Thanks to all for your valuable input.

I agree, there is so many items that could be evaluated, the trick is to keep it simple and not let it get overwhelming especially if it is a small company. ;)

I dont think your going to have much luck terry, the last post for this thread was almost 2 years ago, and AS9100 Lady hasn't logged on in a year. But I'm sure there's others around that has become a expert in Risk Management by now :p. Id love to help but im still new at this myself. good luck.

Risk assessment can be more than missing delivery. You need to also look into the planning stages as well. You need to assess the risk of producing product to the AS requirement in all aspects of manufacturing (including human resources). We found a nice descriptive flowchart showing the quoting review process and how that rolled out to manufacturing/planning met our obligations to 7.2.2 including d).

For us this short slightness on our part was brought to our attention in our stage 1 audit. So it was a nice and helpful catch by the auditor.

Hello: could you explain further on the Human Resources aspect?.. do you mean assessing risks when hiring someone or is it employee completence directed?

Human resources is a growing risk issue. Can you find qualified personnel or engineering talent? Will you be able to keep finding them in the future? Kids are not studying engineering anymore so what are you going to do? How will you maintain or grow the business?
