Implementing ISO14001 versus implementing ISO 9001

My company has decided to become ISO certified. At this time we have no one on board who has launched an ISO program but many who people have who worked in ISO environments and a few who have participated in the management review portion of the system. However, management has decided that they would feel more comfortable hiring someone who has experience "launching an ISO program and obtaining certification."

That being said the main candidate we are looking at has managed ISO 9001 and QS 9001 programs but has never implemented them from scratch. He has however implemented an ISO 14001 program from scratch at a company where an effective ISO 9001 program already existed.

My question - is starting up a ISO 14001 program in such a situation comparable to starting an ISO program from scratch? If not, should the lack of experience in launching an ISO 9001 program be a big concern?

Any feedback or additional insights would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Harold

Hi Harold

What standard will be implemented in your company? ISO 9001, ISO 14001 or both?

Sorry for not clarifying, ISO 9001.

Thanks.

In my first years, I participated, as an employee, in an ISO 9001 program, and it was hard to start from scratch (ISO 9002:1994!)

Later, I became Q & EHS Supervisor, and then I developed an ISO 14001 program on the ISO 9001 certified system. It was much easier.

ISO 14001 shares the basics with ISO 9001. When you start with ISO 9001, you have a better approach to the way of work with standards.

Kind regards,

Trixi

Hi Harold,

is starting up a ISO 14001 program in such a situation comparable to starting an ISO program from scratch?
No. Starting a second management system on top of one already running is much easier than starting one from scratch. But...

If not, should the lack of experience in launching an ISO 9001 program be a big concern?
No, it shouldn't be a big concern. Someone with experience managing a successful ISO 9001 QMS is likely well prepared to start one from scratch.

More importantly than having an experienced employee, you would do well to retain a competent external consultant to assist you during implementation. Such a person can help in many ways: keep the project on track, facilitate resolution of conflicts, quickly answer questions, offer constructive criticism, provide training, etc., all while avoiding internal friction that often arises in teams under pressure. You can ask the consultant to adjust the time spent per week on your project as your team members develop competency in the standard and the new system. This is what we did at my company when we started out on our QMS, and it worked out for us.

Good luck with your new challenge!

Re: Implementing ISO14001 versus implementing ISO 9001

Hi Harold,

It would be better to have someone experience to kick-start the ISO 9001 project.

This is because previously when I am helping my company to become ISO 9001 certified, I have zero knowledge and no one guiding me all the way. The only way for me to implement this is to look for information on the website and forum and It took me much more times to implement compared to those who already have knowledge. But of course you will learn a lot of things during the stages which is very helpful for you in future.

To answer your question, starting an ISO 14001 in such situation is not comparable to starting ISO 9001 as most of the standard requirements in ISO 14001 are cross-linked with ISO 9001.

In fact, ISO 9001 has more requirements and tougher to establish if compared to ISO 14001 which is relatively easy to implement.

If your company is giving you a short duration to become ISO 9001 certified, I will recommend you to bring in someone who is really experienced to make the things easier.

But it will always be good if you participate from the beginning stage to the implementation stage. A lot of knowledge will be gained from the preparation part.

Re: Implementing ISO14001 versus implementing ISO 9001

Hi,

The ISO 9001 & ISO 14001 two systems are completely diffetent hence those worked in ISO 9001: 2008 can be confortable in working ISO 14001 sytem but systems me be different.

There is not much of documentation in ISO 14001. Hence I don't this any big concern to implement ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 systems.

I am lead auditor for ISO 14001: 2004 & ISO 9001: 2008 having 11 years experience in both system. Please let me know if you required any help in this regards.
