joanne24783 - 2005

Hello, I have just graduated with a degree in quality management and have just starting a 1 year placement implementing ISO in the operations department of a brewery. Any ideas on where to start? They already have it in the brewery however this part deals with our manged and tebncy pub houses, legal issues with regards to this and employment issues. I am not sure whether i need to go into depth with suppliers or woyld this just be manufacturing concerned??? I am familiar with the standard however since i feel it is manufacturing biased i am having difficulties!!!!!!!!!! :o :o

All work is a process!

Joanne,

If they "have it" in the brewery, then you can have it in the managed and tebncy houses (whatever they are?). As the saying goes, All work is a process. Identify the process and determine the sequence and interaction of these processes. If there are interactions between the brewery and the operations then you will be determining what responsibilities operations plays in the purchasing process. Remember you are building a Management System and you will do well.

Pub registration - now that's quality

Welcome, Joanne.

I go along with what Doug says. My advice for your starting point is to understand what the business is - i.e. who the customers are and what services they require form the business you are looking to describe systems for.

My guess from the description is that your operation is involved in the set up of contracts for tenants and managers and the customers are the tenants/managers, the people who supply the pubs and the people who sign on behalf of the brewery. the processes include recruitment, setting up agreements and possibly terminating contracts. Difficult to say who the suppliers are at this stage - probably recruitment and advertising agencies, legal and HR experts.

I hope this helps. If you need me to do any on site testing at the pubs - just give me a shout.

Urgent ISO help and guidance please

since i am implementing iso in one dept (operations) these are the areas i cover
Licensing laws for pubs
recruitment of mangers for the pubs
absenteism
area management responsibilities (they are in charge of the pubs e.g conduct audits every 6 mnths and so on)
this would indicate my area is monitoring and recruiting so would areas such as suppliers still be needed. E.g do i need to list trainers we use to educate staff etc? i am getting so confused. my degree lecturers taught us ISO based on a manufacturing case study and didnt mention anything about certain departments implementing the thing.
Furthermore they already have it in the brewery and the main manual doesnt apply much to us.. Can anyone give me some guidance please?

thanks

Thanks. This is a pretty big challenge for me as iv only just graduated and have sort of thrown into this. I think i will be the youngest member to join the IQA at this rate!!!! :)

Joanne,

First of all, Congrats on your recent graduation and your new "assignment"

Now, for the issue at hand:

Relax.

I mean it! Take it easy. I have been through this start to finish many times and helped others in many instances. I have NEVER been involved with a failed attempt. You are in an excellent resource spot and people here will help you through to the end.

Forget manufacturing. Start by picking up the standard and going through section by section.

Ask yourself this question for each one, Does this apply, and if yes, how do I show we do it?

If it clearly does not apply, put it aside and move on. If it does apply, either write down how you document that you do it, or start putting down ideas of how you could.

Get back to us when you are done and we can go through point by point.

Feel free to contact me direct via my profile.

Remember, RELAX.

Yes, contracted trainers would be considered suppliers.

Although the original standard was written around manufacturing, the latest revision, ISO 9001:2000, is frendlier towards other types of businesses.

Look into revising the main manual and scope of the certification to include your operation, rather than reinventing the wheel. With having a limited understanding of your business it is hard to advise you.

An interesting concept, implementing ISO in one dept.

I suppose you (your dept) will have to pass an assessment by a UKAS approved accreditation body?

You would therefore need to implement/cover all the required bits of ISO?

Off the top of my head that would include;

Quality Manual
Quality Policy
Quality Objectives
Process descriptions & their interactions.
Process Measures
Minimum 6 Procedures.

+ all of the "shalls" in the standard.

Bits like monitoring & measuring devices will be tricky maybe, but a seach through the cove or a talk with your selected assessment body on ISO for non-manufacturing organisations should do the trick.

Adding a quality plan

Hi Joanne

I sometimes have to add a new department to an existing quality certification.

I have found that a suitable way is to write a quality plan, a cut down manual specifically for your department. You mentioned a few processes that your area is responsible for and the manual would be based around these.

If there is a main manual covering the brewery then it should address the basic ISO elements for example training. I would only cover training in the quality plan if your training system is different.

You should then be able to be added to the existing certification scope.
