I found this article very interesting. Although, most of what has mentioned here are about the health and safety, it is also focused on the culture of people and the rational reason why any good system fails.
Yes, we do have very good operational procedures and in a way it is evolving through us. But sometimes people don’t believe in those so called policies and procedures so they did not follow it. Or probably their immediate supervisors are not behaving as a good example in following them. They are only effective when there’s problem.
Why do people do shortcuts? Probably they saw their boss doing it.
Some companies did not improve much since they discovered procedures, policies and the so called ISO. Despite suggestion of improvement, non of those suggestion were materialized. Why? Suggesting them to the immediate supervisor is the first obstacle, probably because it came from someone inferior to them. Before you even begin your sentence, you are being shunted away. They (managers) have their own explanation why those suggestions were not possible. Come to think of it, those suggestions were not from outer space, they are common practice being successfully implemented by other companies.
Those accepting the fact that a rank and file suggested is a big deal. And if they accepted it, next step will be the implementation. Some will say it’s so bureaucratic others says will hampers our daily operation (even though its just 1 form to fill out).
One way to improve the culture is to reinforce leadership, vision and values and to acknowledge that we are not perfect and that we have a problem. A calm tide is the best time to hear the sound of wind. Meaning, working together and set aside the ego of the position and think of the betterment of the company.
You’re not superman whose hair is always perfect despite flying thru strong winds, you are not perfect and only human to commit mistake.
So there is no such thing as perfect only continual improvement, team work and a good cup of coffee.
