Implications of Dropping ISO 9001 Certification

Our company is considering dropping its ISO 9001 certification while we are in the middle of a 3-year cycle; we just had our re-certification audit a couple of months ago. Since we've met our obligations for the audit this year I'm assuming our certificate is still good until the registrar calls us for the next audit next year, when I plan to let them know we no longer require ISO 9001 certification upon which they'll revoke our certificate.

Are there any implications from the perspective of our registrar we should be aware of? Could there be any penalties of any kind we should consider?

I would appreciate any insights/advice on this.

Thanks.

If it's in the middle of the 3 year cycle they may try to fight you for the money, every registrar is probably different but we dropped a 17025 cert and they wouldn't let go about the money, We just paid them and asked to not renew after the cycle.

There is no real impact regulationwise dropping it mid cycle. You will probably want to review the contact you signed with you registrar as that is highly likley to have a clause covering early terminiation and detail any penalties within.

Also look at your Customers. How many are requiring at a minimum ISO certification and need to be notified once you drop the ISO cert.

On the side of the coin of not having a certificate, I recently helped a company gain AS9100D certification after their prime customer cut them off until they got certified. Loosing the lion's share of business was driving them toward bankruptcy. They thought they didn't have much competition.

Thanks for the feedback.

We have no customer requirements driving the need for certification. We thought a couple of years ago we needed the certification to enter the EU market but having learned from this, we don't actually need the certificate given that the regulation allow our class of product to simply self-declare compliance.

Our registrar's rules don't mention anything about early termination from us so we are probably OK.

Thanks again.
