In Need of GIDEP Guidance

Hi All,

I'm relatively new to aerospace, and one of our customers is throwing a number of GIDEP alerts my way asking if we use any of the items in the alerts. First let me back up by saying we're a small buy/resell distributor of electronic components. By "small", I mean, I'm the Quality Department except for 2 Inspectors who have no idea what GIDEP is. Our company does no assembly, manufacturing or testing of the products we sell. To say I'm overwhelmed by these GIDEP lists is a serious understatement (one list is 500+ items long), so I'm wondering if there's a "cut to the chase" way of determining what our suppliers use, other than to send these GIDEP alerts to them and flow it up, and await their replies.

Can anyone tell me how you handle these GIDEP alerts? One for example is about porosity in Inconel 718 spooled wire which was found in bolts. I can't fathom how one would use wire to make bolts! Being new to aerospace, none of this makes any sense to me. Thank you all SO much for any help/guidance you can offer.

GIDEP provides a means to alert industry, mostly those involved with aerospace and defense, to report and aid in checking suspected counterfeit materials and products. The data base created provides users to report what they find and to see if there are reports about something they intend to buy.

It sounds like some of the alerts that are being passed on to you are not remotely related to anything you provide.

Is your customer asking you to respond to any of the alerts?

It is probably best that you don't ignore them. Although you are not required by AS9100 to keep a record of the GIDEP alerts it may be a good practice to do so. A simple note added to the alert in your handwriting indicating that it does not appear to apply to you, and why you think it doesn't could be used to show that it was considered.

Whatever you do about it, I strongly suggest you have a look at 8.1.4 in AS9100D to review your responsibilities concerning counterfeit parts.

Thanks Jim. Our customer initiated a Webex call today to answer questions. it seems the 7 GIDEP alertss were tied to one item we bought/re-sold to the customer. They educated us to simply flow "up" these alerts to our source and they should keep flowing until they got to the manufacturer. So I guess "It" sometimes does flow uphill.

The issues weren't about counterfeit components, but defective ones from the manufacturer. Such as porosity in wire.
