In principle, An incidetal investigation has two motives:
1) To contain the situation
2) To identify all potential causes ( There can be many causes (potential) associated to an incidental failure)
And Root cause analysis is the result we get after analysis all potential causes.
In nutshell a root cause analysis should plug all potential causes and usually we consider all same as we go more with our biased guts
