Initial Status Review - Certification to OHSAS 18001

Hello All,

My partner and I recently bought a small company that specialises in the restoration and maintenance of vehicles and are in the process of developing a plan for the company to address accreditation to OHSAS 180001.

I would want advice on the importance of initial status reviews, within the framework of developing a health and safety management system as I’m a complete novice in this field and want to have a hang of this before I start developing the plan.

Hello Nigel - fellow Brit, eh? Welcome to the Cove, btw.

Let's just check on terminology for our posters here: Are you thinking 'initial status reviews' are of your own business to identify the safety hazards, risks etc associated with the operations of the business and therefore to build your plan to mitigate them? Or, for example, are you thinking of the review performed by the CB as part of the stage 1 audit?

It seems to me as if it's the former.

A quick word right at the out set - your company will be certified, not accredited. Your CB is accredited. It helps because there's a lot of confusion over those two terms...

How important is an initial review?

I'll put it into terms that you'll understand.... How would you know the condition of the equipment you restore or maintain without some kind of preliminary inspection? Inital review is the same thing

Want some help? Purchase a copy of OHSAS 18002:2008 and refer to 4.1.2 Initial Review

OHSAS 18002:2008
Occupational health
and safety management
systems — Guidelines for
the implementation of
OHSAS 18001:2007

Thanks for the head´s up Andy and Randy, yea it’s the former, with my experience pretty much limited just needed an in-depth understanding before I get stuck in building the plan. Would purchase a copy of OHSAS 18002:2008

If I were implementing a HSMS...yep, you betcha and it'll answer many of the questions that will come up. In fact (and I understand the cost) I would also recommend BS8800:2004
