Injection Molding - Resin Drying Specification for EASTMAN Tenite Propionate 385A

This might be a little off the subject here:

Does anyone happen to know where to find the injection molding drying specification for EASTMAN Tenite Propionate 385A? This information is not available on product their data sheet.

Check this out: I called EASTMAN and I was told, even though we're a customer (purchased through a vendor), I couldn't talk to their technical people. I applaud Eastman! They have so many customers that they afford to ostracize existing customers.

Venting over now. Seriously though, if anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.

Thank you very much! I actually already have that doc. They do give typical drying times, but, unlike on their other specs sheets, they do not include the moisture spec.

I'm afraid that of we cannot qualify this material, we will have to turn to another mfg that is more willing to give us information.

In processing the Eastman Tenite CAP you'd want the moisture content as measured after drying to be .04% or less. Following their suggested dry times which are dependent on 1) your building ambient temps & humidity, and 2)throughput per hour-- you should have no problems achieving a .03 or less consistently.
Obviously you'll need a moisture analyzer to measure moisture content.

Out of curiosity, what alternate materials are being considered?

Kevin, thank you very much for your reply. There are many good folks at Elsmar!

I am still confused. Eastman did put out a little guide that says "generally" the resin should be dried to 0.25%. Other resins of a similar nature have a 0.1% spec. To add to the confusion, I have been unable to obtain a MSDS. Plus, now I have heard that it is a custom material. This is kind of a mess.

I guess that's why they pay me that $1/day, yes?

I may have fat-fingered the keypad on my original note-- I meant the moisture content when dried would generally be less than .3 (the 0.25 Eastman shows rounded-up).

I believe the formulation you are considering the 385A is an Injection Molding "Basic" formula with added mold release agents and of the HT variety- (superstabilized for high-temp processing).
A typical use for this series is in manufacturing eyeglass frames/temples, etc. & most of the time a UV stabilizer is added to the base resin compound.

Additional info such as the MSDS can be retrieved at the Eastman website= http :// eastman .com /products/pages/polymers.aspx - DEAD - 404 - LINK UNLINKED

You should find the MSDS for #358/380/ & 385 almost identical.

Good luck with your search!

p.s. You should:whip: your resin distributor/supplier for not getting you this info sooner.

I finally did get the MSDS from the vendor. Turns out, Eastman does not publish a drying spec for any of their materials. They have this brochure thing that says the "generally" the moisture should be <0.25%.

We some tests and came up with our own spec. We found that the Novatec dryer would dry the material way below our <0.10% specification for our other materials-so we went with that.

I really appreciate your help though-you gave me something to think about which lead to the answer!
