Who is responsible in a manufacturing organisation for inspection requirements? i.e. what to inspect to?

I'm talking about sheet metal parts, sub assembled parts & final assembled parts.

Any help is appreciated.

I am afraid the unpleasant answer is, it depends. It depends on how your organization is set-up or organized and probably its maturity.

Generally, it is QC who does the inspection but in many organizations, it is production themselves - and there are many good reasons why it should be so.

Hi Harry,

I realise who should carry out the inspection; and in fact both QC and production do here.
What I was after was who determines what the requirements of inspection are?
as in - inspect part number 1234 to inspection document 5678.

I guess this should be a drawing usually - but our drawings arn't inspection documents and will contain measurements which are un-measureable at least with the tools we have - see crude drawing example attached.

Regards,

Nick

As per me, manufacturing perssonle must inspect to confirm it's status. As if any correction is required to achieve the conformity, then those are the only perssonel who can do it and manufactur the OK parts.

Are you refering to what to inspect, when to inspect, who to do it and what dimensions or tools to use?

If your question is about who sets the tolerances and dispositions discrepant material, it should be an engineering group that understands the design well enough to specify acceptability so as to enable production to perform with maximum profitability. Whether that group falls under production or a separate entity within the company depends on the organization.

What I can say with absolute certainty is that the group that sets inspection tolerances must be held accountable in some way for the performance of the components. For example, if production sets tolerances, performs pre-production inspections, and final inspections, it will reward decisions that sacrifice quality to gain maximum output only. In most organizations this will eventually lead to excessively poor product quality. This is particularly critical if the final product has elements of quality that cannot be completely verified in a final inspection process by a separate part of the organization.

If you have drawings but are not able to inspected to them, then you must decide whether it's an inspection equipment problem or a drawing problem.
