What I meant was that using a checklist with guidance questions is allowed, as long as there is also a process audit to go with it. The process audit needs to review the inputs and outputs, the process criteria and metrics, the sequence of the process, and the linkages.
Question: Isn't auditing each process input and output the same with auditing the linkages?

Inputs and outputs are linkages, yes. But there are linkages to supporting processes as well. Things like gages, training, document control, corrective actions, etc. These are generally not picked up when reviewing outputs.
