Internal Audit Frequency - What does "at Planned Intervals" mean?

I could not find this topic so please forgive me. Our L2 Internal Audit Procedure says "A minimum of one audit should be completed annually to each defined QMS process to the requirements of AS9100."

The AS9101D says " at Planned intervals".

What does this mean exactly?

Re: Internal Audit frequency?

It depend on the top Mangement attitude .But generally If you found that in yearly audit ,you have more Major NCR in the audit then you should have to increase the frequency . Also it depend on the attitude that how much importance is given for the implementation of ISO system in organization .

It is up to the organization to define the frequency of the internal audits.
The frequency could be increased in case of major problems in the organization ( major ncn, internal or external, complaints etc.):bigwave:

Donning my nit-picky auditor hat, there is a difference between "should be completed" and "must be completed."

forgive me if i misunderstood, but what they are looking for is that you audit your QMS processes to a schedule. what they want to see is that you plan out audits ahead of time.

for instance, if your QMS has 4 core processes, then they would expect to see that each of these is audited at least once a year (per your procedure) and that you have the audits scheduled ahead of time. in this scenario, you would kinda expect to see audits done on a quarterly basis with the schedule identifying which core proscess is to be audited in which quarter. then they will want to see that audits are performed per that schedule.

Changes are inevitable and continual improvement is desired in a management system. Business is dynamic and growth must be the order or business will be dynamic in the wrong direction. How do you assess all this within yourself.
As a part of the CHECK of the management system, you internal audit.
So your frequency must match the rate of change, continual improvement, growth such that management gets a timely feedback of the system performance. Where processes are found weak, more audits are planned to CHECK effectiveness of actions taken.
There is nothing annual about audit.
Yaaa, the CB come annually and if they find that you are not internally auditing anything between there two visits and they find you having deficiencies, you are gone >>>>
Now you decide what must be your planned interval.... :notme:

Your SOP defined planned interval to be one year (per approved audit schedule). You can change "planned interval" to mean daily, weekly, montly, quarterly, annually, etc... The selection of "planned interval" ultimately depends on your industry, resource and your last corrective action. A CAPA may cause a revisit in 6 months versus every 12 months.

Try this on for size...."Within a scheduled time-frame"

You define the time-frame (But be careful or you could wind up playing Russian Roulette with a single shot pistol in defining the time-frame)

I don't believe it's a matter of attitude! ISO 9000, 9001 and 9004 all make the point that management should use data!

We simply have to ensure two things - and there's a danger in taking one requirement/phrase of the standard and analyzing it in isolation of the others - because we have to consider:

Internal audits have to be performed at planned intervals and that an audit programme (a series of audits) has to be established taking into consideration etc...

It is not, despite conventional wisdom, necessary or even desirable to have a whole 12 month calendar of audits planned out, or that you commit to even doing an audit a month! You can decide on the prevailing business conditions if you need to do an audit a month for say the 'slow' period of the financial year, or increase them to weekly, when there's a push to get product shipped and invoiced at the end of the financial year, as examples.

You decide - but it had better be based on data...
