Internal Audit Training Help - Audit Nonconformance

I work in a small family run fiberglass shop. We are currently ISO 9001 certified. We recently had an audit and received a minor in internal auditing. This was a well deserved hit. Upper management is now willing to do something about the nonconformance. Until this hit I could not get the people I needed to do proper internal audits.
Anyways, I now have to retrain four internal audits who had outside training about three years ago.
Only one cuurently does audits with me but neither one of us are very well trained.
Does anyone have suggestions that would help me train for this???

There are lots of options for training internal auditors. Some are formal, such as sending your folks to a class. Some are less formal, such as reading books, newsletters, and of course The Cove.

Some considerations:

How far do you want to travel? Grand Rapids? Detroit? Chicago?

Do you want to train all of the auditors, or train yourself, and you train the others?

Do you need something as formal as Lead Auditor class? Or would strictly internal auditor training suffice?

How much are you looking to spend? Does this include hotel, meals and travel?

You could always have a look around in the neighbourhood to see if there is any company nearby that would be willing to trade a couple of audits. If the other company is not in the same line of business, you needn't worry about your secrets, and I think I can safely promise that you will both learn a lot from the experience. Benchmarking and auditing in one go...

Here's the scoop. We live in Manistee Michigan. I dont know if anyones heard of it but it is about 2 1/2 hours north of Grand Rapids. I have gone through Lead auditor training recently but I am the only one with training in the last year. Like most upper management, they would like to spend as least as possible. They may go for day classes by I highly doubt they would go for putting us all up in a hotel for even one night. I pretty well know the jist of internal audits but I am not a good teacher. I really think that they want me to teach the internal auditors, or at least give it a try. So that they dont have to go outside the company for later training.

Our company is in the middle of Manistee national Forest--literally--closest business is at least ten miles away and our summer inventory consists of mainly Deep Woods Off--but anyway I am sure we can find a company to do that with and your right it would be a great learning experience for both of us. Also it's free.

A couple of things here, first of all I've been through Manistee on several occasions. The Manistee River has some of the best fishing in the state! I don't think I've seen a bad day from Ludington, north along the shore!

As far as you being a trainer, one way to "ease the pain" would be for you to mentor others. Take the four you mentioned in your first post. Sit down with them for a couple hours, once a week to discuss the differences in now, and when they were trained. Then work with them individually, one at a time, until you feel they get the hang on it. I would present it, not like you are trying to train them, but you will be working with them. Sometimes in small shops, folks get a bit defensive when someone internally is trying to do the training.

Part of the training, might also be to have them check the Cove out. Have them ask questions. Also, you might find someone willing to work out some sort of trade for services. For example....If someone there owns a boat big enough to say, go after some big browns out in Lake Michigan, and you can find someone who would be willing to trade a day training for a day fishing, then you might get off a bit easy. Just an example, now.

Training is easly available...its just a matter of how much time you want to spend learning it....and how much your company is willing to spend on the training.

Conducting benchmark activities with suppliers and customer is always time well spent. A lot can be learned by observing what other organizations do....all part of the mutual beneficial supplier/customer relationship ISO encourages so well.

I'm responsible for our audit program at work. We are a small company of 47. We supply plastic components, and our customer base is both medical and industrial. I have received training and read books on the topic.

Internal audits is a unique process, and the more you conduct, the more effective the process is. For starters, I don't use the term "internal audit"...people freak out....and at times scurry away like mice sometimes saying "where's my cheese"..... sorry about that off on a quality tangent there

Our audit program is called a PSP Audit (Product / System / Process). My audit schedule details each department and the type of audit that will be conducted. Of course manufacturing gets the full PSP, as where customer service gets the SP audit. The overall schedule is flexible, and I tend to focus on the "hot spots".

It is also important to ask question that will give you a sense of the culture and work enviroment. You could ask; "Can you offer suggestion for improvement that would make your job more effecient and effective?". Get the people involved, employee involvement is healthy to any organization.

Auditing materials

James Bowman Associates has some great e-learning material which will help train your intermal audiotrs. The Quality Control Council of Indiana also has a great trainingbook with a cd of transparencies.

Could anyone help me figure out how to start my own post? I need to ask if anyone could offer some sample transition plans (to TS16949) to ensure I am not overlooking anything.

Right at the bottom of this screen (scroll way down) is a pick-list called "Forum Jump". If you scroll down through that list, you'll see (under Automotive) a forum called ISO/TS 16949. I'm also new here... I have problem also with regards to ISO auditing... We are now currently applying for an ISO9001:2008, and as a beginner, I don't know how am I going to start internal audit.. Could anyone give me an idea for an audit plan and how to audit? Is it really important to have a consultant? Thanks for the help in advance...
