Internal Auditor --> Licence needed?

Hi everyone,
so we are implementing QMS according to ISO 9001 at the moment and therefore planning internal audits for the first time.
So my question:
Does a person need a special licence to be an internal auditor?
Or can anyone act as an auditor, as long as he/she is not audition their on work?

Cheers!

No special licence is required. It is just a matter of competence. This can be demonstrated (e.g. recorded in a training record) by internal training conducted (including self-training) or external training.

Per the standard: No.

Some countries may require specialist licence's (I don't know of any but then I don't know much about other countries).

One place I worked let us certified (external trained) internal auditors use an auditor in training to help us audit. They were 'shown the ropes' and learned how we audited. Once they were competent in a certain section, we would sign them off and they could perform an audit on that section of the standard. Over time they would eventually be a full fledged auditor after completing training on all of the sections and be handed a certificate.
You can also have group training done at your facility but someone should confirm the audits are being done well with evidence.

No, you don't need a special license and auditors must be independent of the audit area.

You could put a requirement for a license/certification in the role specification, but this would not add any value.

You a starting an internal audit - first, see how other do it - taking a lead auditor course is not a bad idea.

No requirements in the ISO 9001:2008 for a certificate and if you wait, the requirements are even more relax for the ISO 901:2015 standard.

It would be interest to see how it works out - not everyone is ready to become an internal audit - your friends... well....:popcorn::popcorn::popcorn:

Be careful not to confuse training with competence - I have met many a person who has been through auditor training (internal and external) but were not competent to conduct a 'good' audit.

Certainly, training is likely to be part of the equation but so is practical application of the skills. Looking at some audits they have done is one of the best ways of determining whether they have assimilated the skills and been able to apply them.

Oh, don't forget that such competence can be perishable - if you don't use it you lose it so make sure that auditors are not just wheeled out once a year and expected to perform to their best.
