For some reason, I am having difficulty in correlating the concept of "mentoring" with the key words used such as "How Good" or "relevant"... The key words relate to conformance and mentoring should establish a path to promoting individual talent and approach, innovation, coached, improvements, etc...
My son was one of the "gifted children" and was placed in special classes. He benefited from mentoring... I think 99% of the population possess special gifts. We can all benefit from a good mentor.... A mentor should make individuals to look at the grand prize....

A mentor shouldn't observe and comment on the behavior of the protégé, especially after some specific training? To "mentor" is to provide guidance and counsel to one less experienced, nothing more.

I, too, have done the mentoring thing, but usually as part of the client's ongoing internal audit program.
But then I work more closely with fewer clients, I believe.
Andy's observation is right on. You really get valuable feedback when you see your students struggle to implement the concepts you so brilliantly communicated (or not, as sometimes happens.)
