Internal Auditor Training - How much training and what kind of training

I have been solely responsible for getting this company prepared for ISO certification. I have started from ground zero...it's a fairly new company and very small in size.
I'm learning as I'm going along, but I know that in order to be a lead auditor in the company ISO requires training.
So my question is, how much training and what kind of training will I need in order to be "qualified" as an auditor?

Re: Auditor training?

Good morning,

Qualification is defined within your organization. My organization's qualifications include ASQ CQA and/or a Lead Auditor class. I personally would recommend both, so as to develop a well rounded knowledge base of the subject.

To be an auditor; you should first get a training in audit (ISO 19011) of QHSE matters
(ISO 9001, ISO1400). You have previous to this, be able to shown some years of works as experienced in World of work :)
After this, the first audit where you will attend, you will be as an observer, and to participate in 2 additional audits to become an auditor under the direction of audit responsible.
You can pretend to a lead auditor position, of course if you have the proper skills to manage an audit and a team audit and after additional 3 audits fulfilling these 2 systems.
If you can have training with the IRCA, BVQI...etc, it would be nice in IMO. But maybe in US; you have another company which supply this training
Hope this help

You don't have to be a 'lead auditor' and training can come in many forms/types. Attending a course can be somewhat useful, having someone to mentor you can be even more effective. Competencies are what is really necessary to attain. So developing those and then seeing what training might be necessary is a better route to go, IMHO.

Re: Auditor training?

The company I'm working for doesn't have a lot of extra money to spend on multiple classes.
If I'm to audit the company's QMS...doesn't ISO require me to have some auditor training?
I have had no training and no experience.
I've done a lot of reading and research and have begun implementing the system on my own.

Actually, the standard on requires that you are competent to perform audits, it is the company's responsibility to describe how they determined that you are competent. Please note that you may not audit your own work, so.... you will need at least two internal auditors.

Also, a word of caution, unless you are going to performed ISO surveillance audits, I strongly recommend that you only focus on internal audit training classes.

Good Luck!

Re: Auditor training?

As others have suggested, your competence is ultimately the thing that matters most. However, to become competent usually involves having some training. As Andy stated, having a mentor is a great way to help build your competence but if it is a small company it is unlikely that anyone else has these skills internally.

I would certainly encourage you to attend a training course but which one? Well, you should definitely consider a good internal auditor course - preferably a 'registered' 2 day course. A course registered by IRCA or someone equivalent will ensure that certain basics are addressed and that it is not just 'any old course' that someone thought would be a good idea.

As for lead auditor, yes it is a really good idea but I would not recommend anyone to go directly on the LA course if they are starting from scratch as it is a tough week and you are unlikely to get the real benefits from the course. Perhaps do the IA and then look to use the LA course as a personal development opportunity in the next year.

Re: Auditor training?

If you do some digging, you will find there are a few folks here that teach internal auditing.

Re: Auditor training?

Here it is short and sweet...

What has to be done?

Is it being done?

There you go, that's as basic as auditing gets, now go check yourself

If you can show that you can verify that whatever it is your company is required to do (provide evidence of it happening) your company can bless you as an auditor (you have demonstrated competence)

I've seen people take multiple auditing course and not be able to audit themselves out of a box....it ain't the training, it's the ability

I'm going to guess that you might be here in the USA. If so, contact your local ASQ section. They might have some people willing to mentor you for the price of lunch. I know I would! If not in the USA, then look for some local Quality professional group - in the UK we had our section of the CIQA which was very much like the USA's ASQ - they exist in many countries. Check the person's credentials first, of course but this can be much more effective to get individualized on-the-job training, than in class - most cost effective too, since the auit system can be developed at the same time as you're mentored.......
