Internal Calibration - Testing Laboratory

We perform a number of internal calibrations using NABL accredited Masters and Standard / recommended pratcies.
While going through the process of Testing lab accreditation, what is the status of the Internal calibrations performed?
We have no plans to offer calibration as a scope to third parties.

Re: Internal Calibration

Hello there!

Are you asking if your internal calibration practices need to be accredited?

Do you have any customer/ industry requirement that would require it?

What industry do you perform work?

In general, I would say your internal process does not have to be accredited. However, you should still be utilizing proper standards, uncertainties, training, etc.

You want your calibration process to be a good one producing meaningful results, whether certification/accreditation is required or not.

I'm not sure if that helped at all. Please feel free to repost.

Re: Internal Calibration

As such no requirements spelt out.

Question more towards safeguarding the preparations and land into any surprises.

Any other view is welcome.

If you have a lab that is or is going to be accredited, whether or not your internal calibration services need to be included in the scope is dependent on several considerations, such as:
  • If you're performing calibrations of the equipment used in lab testing;
  • Customer requirements; if your lab is performing testing services your customers will probably expect that calibrations of the equipment will be done by an accredited source.
If you tell us a little more about your business, we can offer more specific advice.

The Testing laboratory is a part of its parent manufacturing facility.

the activities are:

1. Third party testing (for others products)
2. Testing for internal own use.

For case 1:
The laboratory is performing Mechanical and electrical testing as per the requirements of the ultimate buyers.

Suppliers seek the facility to get the product approved for their prototype.

For case 2:
The manufacturing facility also uses the Testing facility to meet its byuer's requirements.

For both cases:
All tests are witnessed by representatives of the buyer.

For the testing procedures, the Lab follows either the BIS / ASTM / IEC OR the buyer's spec.

For many of the tests, the Masters are calibrated in Accredited labs as required.

Using these, any other calibration required are done internally.

I hope this provides the answer you are expecting,

First thing you need to do is contact NABL to get their view on this.....

The organization I work for takes the view that internal calibration for an accredited organization must meet the same requirements as an accredited external calibration provider does.....

However, NABL may take the same view or a different one.....any advice we give here, without you finding out NABL's view first, may not help you.....

krishkaar,

As I have a great amount of respect to Hershal's opinions, I would concur with his suggestions. In the end, I think that is the best approach to determining your requirements anyway.

The standard requires that you have and apply a procedure for measurement of uncertainty on your internally calibrated instruments, it does not however state that you need to have these internal calibrations accreditted in your scope.

It does however, specify that if you subcontract any calibrations/tests these shall be performed by a competent subcontractor (appropriate accreditation).

We are a testing laboratory and as such we do many internal calibrations which follow well recognized methods. We do not hold accreditations for these calibration methods and this has never been an issue with our AB.

I'll be interested to hear what NABL has to say on this. I just can't see it being required as it is not really a value added venture unless you were planning on calibrating third party instruments.:2cents:

Yap. We are trying to discuss with NABL. I will definetly update after I get a feedback.

We have no scope OR plan to perform calibration for third party.
