Hi guys

Hope i am in the right place to ask this.
Just wondering whether there are any international standards (ASTM, ISO, JIS, AS, EN, ........etc etc) that define how to use a CMM (Coordinate measuring machine), i.e. how should a specimen should be clamped, whether the specimen should be securely fasten, how should temperature be controlled and etc etc........
Thank you

I would use your CMM instructions for use and ensure it's calibrated.

There are CMM standards, but they're not what you're looking for.
Your drawings and sampling plans should tell you what you need to know.

Thanks for your respond.
To be precise, I have been using a clamping jig to securely fasten the workpiece while performing cmm inspection. The reason of using the clamping jig is to ensure that workpiece does not move at all, while cmm is in inspection mode.
However, recently one of my customer commented that we should rest the workpiece on V block instead of securely locate the workpiece on a jig.
I have tried both method, on V block and on clamping jig. Result obtain was almost identical, i.e. max deviation 5microns.
Personally i prefer to use clamping jig to increase the inspection cycle time. Therefore, i was hoping that i could find some international standard that can support my view point.
If there isn't any international standards specifying this, any personal opinion from any cmm expert will be greatly appreciated as well.
thanks

The inspection setup is often dictated by the datum features specified (I hope) on the part drawing. On a CMM, datums can be created more easily than using an open (conventional) inspection process. As long as the inspection process minimizes variation between subsequent part inspections, I believe you're OK.

Have you considered performing a Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA) to verify the variation between your method and the Customer's recommended setup?

Ask your customer if there's a valid reason for resting it on a V block instead.

And by the way, I could be wrong.....try to find out what's in BS 7172 - it covers position assessment, but I'm not sure that's what you are looking for either.
