Very nice!!!
You may get some flack from the statisticians as to how exactly this calculation was arrived at and whether it is really valid according to the way that the formula is set up, but, overall, I believe that we need more of this in QE / QA / QC.
Until only recently, I was not satisfied with the whole
FMEA process either. Ten different customers, ten different interpretations of RPN and its' meaning in relationship to their product!! But, I recently had a customer (a rather large well-know conglomerate) who actually put together a manual describing how to interpret ALL the values of the FMEA, not just the FMEA.
So, to make a long story short, I believe that you have hit the nail on the head in beginning to tie up the loose ends as it relates to numbers that have tremendous value, but are just being left in a silo. When we take the entire process of FMEA, MSA, Control Plans, Process Maps and can intertwine them and make them all function better as a result of the information that the other tool provides, well, my friend, I believe that is the holy grail that we are all chasing. When we can actually see the merit and benefit of aquiring these numbers and putting them to use, I believe that the excersize of performing the task will begin to be generallly accepted by all and not just us "quality geeks". I have not really seen anyone try and inter-relate MSA and FMEA values as you have with this, so, while there may be some more developement - keep up the great work and please, if you come up with any mutated versions of this sheet or other inter-related functions - be sure to post again!!!
