Inventory Parts Have Been Revised

We have just received a new order from our customer for some rev B parts.
We have some in inventory at rev A.
They can not be reworked and will have to be scrapped.
Can I just scrap them and adjust inventory to zero.
Or do I need to write them up as non-conforming?
ISO 9001-2008

Thanks

That depends on what your company requires of itself. ISO 9001-2008 places no requirement on you regarding this.

In my group, they would have been scrapped and recorded as scrapped on the inventory record with the reason for the action...but again, that's how my system is written...ISO 9001 placed no requirement on me.

Interesting that the revised part is not backwards compatible; it should have received a new number if it isn't. If the superceded items have already been made and they cannot be re-worked, the superceding item should receive a new part number.

No point in writing them up first; they're going to be scrapped anyway.

This only a question that how do you implement your "change management"?
Such as the engineering change or designing change?
So, there are 2 ideas for your reference:
1. Were the parts follow your customer's order or not? if yes, apply for your customer to except. if not, you must scraped your inventories.
2.If the parts revised, did your engineers release the ECN(engineering change notice) to you? did it show that how to deal the inventories? if it is no, you may check your procedures about your QMS.:)

Hello Johnson.wang, and welcome to the Cove. :bigwave:

Yep. Fair question: If the parts were made to order before the design change reached you, the customer ought to accept or at least pay for them. Judging from mannym01's question I presume that no great sums are involved, but situations like this could break a supplier if the parts are hugely expensive to make.

When the rev B was released, the customer must have asked and taken the inventory of rev A parts with you which are based on his earlier order, and its disposition and costs understood and agreed by both of you.
They are not NC parts as they are fine per rev A.
Just that the rev A parts are now obsolete.
Your rev B must have a new and identified location.

Is there a requirement to have full traceability of your parts? Do you have to be able to account for all parts ever built (maybe madical device or aviation)? If so you can't just scrap them w/o any documentation.
Also, though the parts are not non-conforming per se, depending on your system (QM and ERP) it might be easier to scrap them after declaring them to be nc as outdated versions rather then trying something the system has not anticipated... You should also consider what cost center will be used when adjusting the inventory; this might also depend on the way you proceed.
