Is a machine capability the right thing to do Next? Laser measuring machine

Hi,

I am a manufacturing engineering in a Electronic industry and new to this forum. I was trying to verify the effectiveness of a new laser measuring machine by carrying out a Gage R&R study. The result I calucalted was 50% which was completely unacceptable. I believe the variation was mostly of a result of the gage and before I get a external service engineer to calibrate the machine I would like to carry out a machine capibility on it. Is it correct to take 50 measurements of a known measurement and put it into a customised excel sheet which I use for calulating Cp, Cpk and not Cm Cmk?

Hi Michael

Welcome to the wacky world of MSA. There are many pitfalls to GR&R especially with very accurate gages trying to detect small part variation.

If you can take the time, please browse through some of the older threads (especiallly the ones on CMMs), there is much there that can help.

Sadly, there is no substitute for study in this case. I invested way more time than I ever wanted to in order to develop a basic understanding of the topic. In our case our CMM was said to be "no good" beacuse it had a GR&R of 90%. Turns out it was the manner in which we conducted the initial study.

You are right to question how a good gage can show such bad results. The gage is likely fine.

In particular make sure the parts in the study span the range of interest, and you don't round off. And about 10 other things.
