We recently had some discussion about is our company qualified to be TS 16949 registered. We provide an assembly service, part sequencing, and kitting operations to a major truck manufacturer. The truck manufacturer is rolling out a requirement that all their suppliers need to be TS 16949 registered. We do not actually manufacture any parts. The truck manufacturer has their Tier 1 suppliers drop ship parts to our warehouse. So everything we handle is customer owned product. We kit the parts, put the kits in line sequence, maybe assemble a couple parts and ship the components to the truck manufacturer.

Is there a requirement for TS 16949 that you actually have to be a manufacturer of automotive parts before qualifying for registration?

Yes, ISO/TS 16949:2009 certification can only be obtained by organizations that manufacture. However, you mentioned: "Maybe assemble a couple of parts..." That would be "manufacturing." What is the percentage of work you assemble? If you are currently ISO 9001:2008 registered, you may want to contact your Registrar and inquire, just to make sure.
